  • “…and then, of course, the third part is - look outside the world of wine.” – Joe Fattorini
    Jan 28 2025

Today’s guests, Joe Fattorini, is a voracious reader, but in fact reads surprisingly little about wine. Talking to Joe reminds me of the famous Charlie Munger quote:

“We both [Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett] insist on a lot of time being available almost every day to just sit and think. That is very uncommon in American business. We read and think.” – Charlie Munger

I envision Joe spending his days, sipping hot chocolates on his balcony in Sweden, reading, thinking and writing. And it shows – Joe’s Substack is full of wisdom, and I learn something (usually many things) everytime he posts.

This podcast covers so much ground, and has lessons for everyone. Thank you Joe for your time, and for sharing this conversation with our community. If you like the episode, be sure to check out Joe’s Substack – I’ll post the link in the podcast comments. Now let’s all go out and become “Bulmore-famous” (Joe talks about this in the podcast, for those who do not know what that means).

  • Episode #11: [Courtney O'Brien] “Wine marketing isn’t working anymore”
    Dec 25 2024

With social media and the internet, it seems everyone has advice on what we should or should not be doing when we market wine. We should highlight the terroir. We shouldn’t mention terroir. We should tell a story. No, not that story. We need to focus on Boomers, because they’re the people who drink wine now. We need to attract Gen Z, because they will drive sales in the future. The future doesn’t matter if we can’t survive the next year. We don’t even need marketing. And for some, I need marketing, but can’t afford it.

With so much noise out there, we decided to get some answers. Trustworthy, reliable answers from a career marketing specialist who has worked for Fortune 500 companies, and some of the biggest names you know – both inside and outside the wine industry – including Coca-Cola, Danone & Gallo.

Introducing Courtney O’Brien, founder of The Outlier Initiative, a growth consultancy for ambitious challenger brands. Listen in to hear her take on what is going right, and what is going wrong, with wine marketing in the twenty-first century.

  • Episode #10: [Knock Knock Wines] How can the wine industry connect with consumers?
    Nov 26 2024

I often say that tradition is holding the wine industry back, and that we need to learn from other industries. From the responses I receive, I know that it causes a lot of discomfort for many wine professionals. So when Knock Knock reached out and told me their story, I knew I had to share it.

This 125-year-old company completely reinvented themselves, then looked to the spirits industry to grow their new brand. Keep listening to find out what they discovered!

  • Episode #9: [Paulo Brammer] "We managed to put Brazil on the map"
    Oct 29 2024

Wine is not “new” in Brazil, but its wine culture, and the wine market, are definitely still in their infancy. However, it is growing… At InnVernia, where I serve as the Business Development Director, we have thrilled guests by offering the chance to watch a winery start from scratch. This is something that normally occurs behind closed doors, and visitors have delighted in events like the “Plant your own Vine” experience. In a similar fashion, you do not often get the chance to watch a market that has the potential to become one of the largest and most dynamic wine markets in the world, effectively start from scratch. Right now, this is happening simultaneously in Brazil, India and, I believe, Nigeria. These are the 7th, 1st and 6th largest countries by population. In terms of wine consumption, Brazil is listed as the 13th largest wine market; India and Nigeria do not even list in the Top 100 (all statistics from worldpopulationreview.com). While I am a little biased about Brazil, its head-start regarding wine consumption, and the Brazilian people’s way of life make Brazil a particularly exciting country to watch. After my last visit, seeing everything that is happening, I HAD to reach out to Paulo Brammer, one of the leaders of the charge in Brazil, to hear his thoughts on the Brazilian market. I hope you all enjoy. — 📲 Follow us on Instagram: www.instagram.com/vino_visionaries_podcast ▶️ Explore more episodes on our YouTube channel: @vino_visionaries 🌐 Visit our website: www.hennekamwines.com 👥 Connect with Paulo: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulo-brammer

  • Episode #8: [Tim Hanni MW] "You need to disrupt the thinking of the collective"
    Sep 24 2024

This week, we're excited to share our conversation with Master of Wine Tim Hanni. He challenges the traditional notion of "perfect" wine and food pairings, asking us to consider their origins. Is this concept truly rooted in history, or is it a modern invention? According to Tim, many ideas around food and wine pairing are based on misconceptions and metaphors, calling "bullsh*t" and detrimental to businesses. What if a customer wants to enjoy Malbec with sushi or Sauvignon Blanc with steak? Are they wrong, or is it the wine professionals who need to rethink their stance? It's time to question these "long-held" beliefs. Let's unlearn outdated concepts and embrace a fresh perspective. If we want to encourage more customers to enjoy wine, we need to stop telling them they're wrong. What do you think? • Episode #7: [Katharina Cser-Mostyn] The concept won't be proven until somebody proves it
    Aug 27 2024

I was co-hosting a webinar when I first heard about Katharina, and Wine Not the Brand. My co-host mentioned her, then there were so many comments about her and what she’s doing that I just had to meet her.

I’ve had so many crazy ideas in the past, like I’m sure many of you have, but I usually talk myself out of them. Katharina and her husband had one too – putting wine in pouches so they could take them jet-skiing without worrying about broken glass. Katharina thought it was just a silly idea, but her husband had already ordered a box of pouches online, so she made some samples and listed them online, to prove what a silly idea it was. Only it wasn’t. They sold out – fast!

In this episode, Katharina describes this wild ride, and the challenges they’ve had to overcome in launching their product. While global wine sales are declining, yet instead of embracing a new source of demand, the industry has been pushing back and resisting change – worried about “quality” and perception, from a new generation that is not.

Why are we still not listening to customers? When are we going to embrace the people and ideas that have the potential to save the wine industry?

I recommend this episode to all the innovators, and entrepreneurs out there, but I also urge EVERYONE in the industry to listen to this episode, and just think about what we can do to embrace these new ideas, and support those who are trying to save this industry, for everyone!

  • Episode #6: [Robert Joseph] Are we thinking about wines the wrong way?
    Jul 30 2024

What do you do when more than 20 years into your career you realise that the path you are on is not what you thought, and is not going to lead you to the life you want to live?

A visionary from the start, respected wine journalist and critic Robert Joseph co-founded Wine International magazine and launched the International Wine Challenge, now one of the world’s leading wine competitions, in 1984. Twenty years later, when they were sold, he realised that none of his well-educated friends knew anything about what he had been writing and he questioned who he had even been writing for? With free wine blogs already starting to emerge, he saw the writing on the wall and made the decision to dramatically alter the course of his career, and life.

Robert is now a wine producer and consultant, with very different views on how we should view wine, our customers, and how we should interact with them. In this episode he shares his current views, including comparisons with classical music, fashion, and how the wine industry confuses interested curiosity for a desire for detailed education.

This episode is for anyone who wants to open their eyes and gain new perspectives. My favourite quote from the episode?

“How do we buy shoes? We find the ones we like, we try them on, and we find the ones we like and we buy them. Nobody says you have to go to the Shoe Education Trust and learn about leather and learn about how they make shoes, how they make soles. Why can’t we treat wine the way we treat clothes?”

    Jun 25 2024

Exploring the future of wine: emerging markets and exciting opportunities I expect a fascinating shift in the industry: while established markets may see a decline, emerging markets like Brazil and India are on the rise. Every time I return to Brazil, I'm blown away by how much, and how quickly, their wine culture is evolving - from limited options just a decade ago to a vibrant, growing industry. And I'm not alone in my optimism, I was privileged to speak with Sonal Holland recently, a visionary in the Indian wine market.
