About this listen
In this heartwarming story of hope and second chances, Emma and Mel are about to discover that sometimes life is about the journey, not the destination…
Classic forgetful Emma—she’s done it again, this time accidentally ruining a Valentine’s Day surprise for her best friend Mel. Desperate to make up for it, she promises Mel a birthday trip to Edinburgh—a girls’ weekend to end all girls’ weekends. There’s just one massive hitch…
Emma has already promised her grandma that she’ll go on a coach trip with her to scatter her grandad’s ashes…In Edinburgh. On Mel’s birthday weekend. Oh God.
That’s right, with one innocent but inevitable diary clash, two very different road trips are thrust together. Surrounded by a bunch of septuagenarians who seem to have forgotten how to have fun, can Emma support Grandma through her grief and give Mel a birthday to remember? Or is their friendship doomed to become roadkill? She’s about to find out…

“Listening to Imogen Church narrate this story is an opportunity to spend a week on a guided bus tour up the coast of Scotland to Edinburgh. Listeners will also learn some history and connect with a dozen or so relatable characters.… Church adeptly portrays each character with subtle inflections to make it clear who's who.”—AudioFile Magazine

Though the unravelling story was an emotional roller coaster.
Narration was superb.
Should be targeted to a young readership.

Thought provoking and heartwarming
The story starts by painting an image of the chaotic lives of flat mates Emma and Mel, single and in their late twenties. Their lifestyle reminded me of my pre marriage life, Although I was somewhat younger than these two.
They unwittingly embark on a seemingly dull coach trip as a compromise when the scatty Emma messes up and double books herself on the week of Mel's birthday.
Their pre-conceived ideas of everything, based on their previous experience in life seem to be correct at first. However as the coach journey, progresses and they get to know a little more about their fellow travellers, they find that everyone has their own reasons for thinking as they do, and that empathy is something to be learned!
I'm approaching my senior years and identified with the excellent observations the author has described. How the difficulties of getting older are not a choice, but a challenge and the awareness that other younger and fitter people are sometimes less than understanding! My own daughter insisted I should use a walking stick to "inform" other people boarding our flight that I had a mobility problem, even though the stock had limited benefits for my particular issue!
I think this book would make an excellent series for television (Sally Wainwright one for your production skills)
The characters are varied and engaging however I am sorry to say that the narrator almost made me give up listening several times! She employed the same little "quirks" for too many different characters! When addressing the main lead, several characters added a pause and then "Emma" which is okay when just one of them does it, but when lots of them do it, it feels awkward. Also the quavering nature of the narrator's voice, implying a submissive tone was greatly overused and totally incorrect for some of the people in the story! I feel that Emma and Mel would be unlikely to have remained good friends in real life because each would have massively pi55ed each other off on a regular basis!
On a more positive note, the narrator was really good at male voices! I
I will definitely seek out more by this author, but may have to read rather than listen if the same narrator is used!
