About this listen
THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER A heartbreaking read of loss and hope from Laura Pearson
The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.
But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.
Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.
It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.
What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…
A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

Friendship and love from a different angle
It was interesting to see how the characters were introduced and developed. I realised what the real relationship between Dot and Mabel was going to be before it was disclosed but not too early to spoil it. I thought the subject was dealt with thoughtfully and well. I laughed out loud at the end re the garden find.

Thoughtful and heartwarming
A sweet story about the choices we make in life, and what if we had done something different. The lovely friendships these women discover transcend age and circumstance, and are nurtured by the desire to help each other. Beautifully written and wonderfully narrated.

A life-affirming listen
Such an uplifting and thought-provoking listen. No words really - just listen and learn about the human capacity for love on many different levels. Breathtakingly excellent narration puts the cherry on the cake.

excellent
I fell in love with Mabel. It's such a bittersweet novel and the narration was some of the best I've experienced on audible.

Heartwarming story
This was a lovely well written book beautifully performed. I wonder if I would have enjoyed as much without the storytellers ability to hear it in Mables voice. It brought tears but also smiles. I throughly recommend this book.

An excellent book, for blokes too!
Not normal thing I listen to but it was on sale and had excellent reviews.
Things didn’t get off to a great start as I found the start of the book a bit more id and couldn’t really see myself getting into the storyline, but I persisted and I’m glad that I did.
The story is very well written and delivered and there is everything to maintain your interest to the end. There is sadness, happiness, intrigue and twists. Pretty much the whole range of emotions that are played out here.
If you are unsure then just go for it because it really is an excellent listen. That’s coming from a bloke who might not be the intended audience! :-)

Absolutely beautiful story and narration
I loved this book so much, so sad I've finished it. It explores many types of relationships and decisions you make in life and I was just pulled into Mables world. The narration was perfect, I'll miss it

An excellent performance of so many characters.
I liked the portrayal of many different kinds of love; and the supportive sisterhood of diverse women; and the theme of being open to new things and ideas no matter your age.
