Summary

The house in Caulfield Place, off Browning Street in Walworth, was haunted, or at least that's what the street kids said. So when two men, a woman and a parrot moved in, everyone was very interested, especially 14-year-old Cassie Ford, who was particularly fascinated by the parrot. And it was just about this time that Mr Finch, Chinese Lady's husband and Boots's stepfather began to get mysterious telephone calls.

Mr Finch had never told the rest of the Adams family - except for Boots - the secrets of his past, or what kind of work he did for the government, and he decided not to tell them about the slightly sinister telephone calls either. It was when he took Chinese Lady on a summer's day jaunt in his Morris motorcar that things began to happen. For, in the Hog's Back Hotel, Chinese Lady went to the cloakroom, and when she came back Mr Finch had vanished. It took all of Boots's ingenuity to discover what had happened, and Cassie's knowledge of the Caulfield Place parrot was to prove a vital clue in unravelling the mystery.

Charming!

These stories are lovely to listen to, not too taxing but still with twists and turns and new characters being brought in and out to keep things interesting.

Not as good as previous books

No real storyline to this book. Rather boring. At least I could multitask and do jobs while listening. Still going to go on and read the next in the series

Disappointed

It was all a bit silly. No feasible storyline. Tilly was both verbally and physically aggressive, and as for tying the little girls to a chair when she went out..! Annoyingly, all of the women characters constantly use threatening language, mainly to their menfolk, apart from Polly who’s still hanging around Boots. And Rosie has turned into an annoying, precocious child, with an unhealthy attachment to her stepfather. One positive note, I did like the characters of Bubbles and Penny Farthing, although their father’s marriage to Tilly happened in a ludicrous way. Thank goodness for the narrator, excellent as always. I’ll listen to the next story, hoping it will be better than this one.

Interesting developments!

This is the first of the series so far I disagree a tiny bit with… (it’s forgivable but un-believable the missing was allowed to live that long, not be tortured for the reason they were took -especially considering who did taking) but still had some lol moments that left you with a big smile.
That being said I was slightly disappointed with the vote and am interested to see how the result evolves the plot twists in future books…. ON TO THE NEXT!

Love this series ❤️

Absolutely amazed to find out that the author was actually a man! Mary Jane Staples being a pseudonym. it is written with so much intuition, and understanding of life and people, so very witty. Feel as if I am part of the family.

Love this series.
So well written and extremely well performed by the narrator, who brings the characters to life and gives consistency to the voices of characters so that you feel like you know them well!
