Summary

From the author of New York Times bestsellers Contagious and Invisible Influence comes a revolutionary approach to changing anyone’s mind.

Everyone has something they want to change. Marketers want to change their customers’ minds and leaders want to change organisations. Start-ups want to change industries and nonprofits want to change the world. But change is hard. Often, we persuade and pressure and push, but nothing moves. Could there be a better way?

This book takes a different approach. Successful change agents know it’s not about pushing harder, or providing more information, it’s about being a catalyst. Catalysts remove roadblocks and reduce the barriers to change. Instead of asking, “How could I change someone’s mind?” they ask a different question: “Why haven’t they changed already? What’s stopping them?”

The Catalyst identifies the key barriers to change and how to mitigate them. You’ll learn how catalysts change minds in the toughest of situations: how hostage negotiators get people to come out with their hands up and how marketers get new products to catch on, how leaders transform organisational culture and how activists ignite social movements, how substance abuse counselors get addicts to realise they have a problem and how political campaigners change deeply rooted political beliefs.

This book is designed for anyone who wants to catalyse change. It provides a powerful way of thinking and a range of techniques that can lead to extraordinary results. Whether you’re trying to change one person, transform an organisation, or shift the way an entire industry does business, this book will teach you how to become a catalyst.

Excellent for leaders

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone in leadership. It forces the reader to think outside the box and consider what actually works rather than the way it has always been done. I have been student of human behavior for over a decade and work in the field of behavior change. I still learned new techniques and was exposed to new perspectives. For those who do not have an education in human behavior, this book is an absolute must-read!!

Better change management book among many

I’ve read a few books on change management by now but this book is different. First of all it doesn’t focus on the exact things most books focus on but the five different things are that are all logically relevant and backed up by research. It’s practical and can be directly applied in almost any situation. Great examples are included. So far it’s the best book on change management I’ve read.

Buy this book!!

As someone who is new to the marketing game, I am still very much in the discovery phase, trying to grow my knowledge of the industry and the basic principles and strategies.

This book is GOLD!! Honestly enjoyed this book from start to end and learnt so much from it!! It not only provides 5 vital obstacles you need to understand to help a customer get past those obstacles to make a sale, but it is packed full of fantastic case studies for each one to really give you a great understanding of the practical implications of the barriers and the methods people have used to get customers past those barriers.

Honestly buy this book!! You won’t regret it

Partially interesting but not ground breaking.

This provided moderate entertainment and discussed a number of good case studies. The theme was more around good sales tactics, than influencing through psychology. There were snippets of good learning points. I was entertained by the audible sample, however the main themes didn’t blow me away.
