Thought extinct during the last ice age, a predator has continued to thrive in the shadow of man and has remained undiscovered in the isolated forests of central Canada. In a quest for a new and distant territory, a young pack of carnivores settles in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. With a busy summer tourist season underway, Sam, a resident bear biologist, is thrown into a tangle of puzzling deaths and disappearances.

In the mid-19th century, millions of Europeans, particularly from the German-speaking regions, dreamed of emigrating to the United States. But they could only dream of what it would be like to emigrate to America, because there were no photographs or movies at the time, and so their dreams were often unrealistic and based on the wondrous and often fantastical tales told to them by land agents and ship companies. Friedrich Gerstäcker, a German adventurer and prolific novelist who was born in Hamburg in 1816, began traveling in his early 20s and made his first trip to North America in 1837.

Man is no longer a threat. Man is food. It has always lived among us, its existence unknown or long forgotten. After a long and brutal winter, this opportunistic predator has finally awoken. Driven by hunger and forced from its territory in search of food, it leaves Wyoming’s Wind River Range for a small, sleepy town. Jim Wendell, the Pine Creek Game and Fish warden receives the task of taking down this creature.
