海野十三と並ぶ戦前のSFの先駆者ですが、活躍した時代が戦時中なのでほとんど世に知られていません。書籍もほとんど書店に並んでいない作家を発見して聴くのもオーディオブックの楽しみのひとつと思います。

山川正夫らしからぬ、と言っては失礼だが、いい意味で期待を裏切られる作品です。説教臭さは微塵もありませんが、この短い作品の中に、改めて考え直してみたいこと、見つめ直してみたいこと、そして諦める事と信じることが凝縮されています。

芥川龍之介の、いわゆる「保吉もの」のひとつです。表面的には大きなドラマのないこの作品は、読み解く人によって様々な解釈が生まれる奥深い作品です。この作品の背景にあるのは「変化」。時代、自己、価値観、女、生活様式。これらの変化が網の目のように張り巡らされた作品です。

いわゆる書簡体の作品で、26歳の「私」が「某作家」の宛てた手紙とその返事という形式です。書簡体小説はゲーテの「若きウエルテルの悩み」や夏目漱石の「こころ」なども書簡体小説の名作です。「トカトントン」は太宰治が金木で書いた最後の作品でもあります。

この作品が書かれたのは1960年。都会では団地がブームで、古い日本家屋から先進的な団地へ移り住むことがステータスだった。そんな時代を背景にして、個が埋没する世情を皮肉る物語です。山川方夫というと教科書に掲載された「夏の葬列」で知られていますが、この作品は山川作品の中でも評価が高く、欧米でも翻訳転載された作品です。

山川方夫得意のショートです。どこにでもありそうな二人で暮らす姉妹の心の中を山川流に描きます。物語のあとはどうなったかという結論は私たちに任されています。聴くたびに、読むたびに違う結果が想像されます。

登場人物の名前や作品名などは変えてあるが、自身をモデルにした小説で、山野（芥川竜之介）、桑田（久米正雄）などの文学仲間が登場する。菊池寛の苦悩と当時まだ卵だった作家たちの野心が見えて興味深い作品に仕上がっている。
