Im April 1945 erreichte die Front das kleine märkische Dorf Halbe, das bis dahin kaum jemand kannte. Doch was sich dann auf den Straßen in sowie auch um diese Ortschaft abspielte, wurde eine der blutigsten Schlachten des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Was im Kriegsjahr 1943 in Stalingrad geschehen war, wiederholte sich zwei Jahre später scheinbar hier.

Doch etwa 50 Kilometer vor der Stalingrader Front gab es Hindernisse. Um das Unternehmen weiterführen zu können, sollten Einzelkämpfer die Bedingungen für den weiteren Vormarsch erkunden! Sie wurden im Hinterland des Feindes nachts über der Wolganiederung abgesetzt. Der Inhalt des Romanes beruht auf Informationen die ein inzwischen 90-jähriger Fallschirmjäger geben konnte. Der Mut dieser Männer ist somit keine Legende!

Am 9. Mai 1941 kaperte die Royal Navy im Nordatlantik das deutsche U-Boot U-110 und sicherte sich dabei eine Enigma-Maschine, deren Chiffrierschlüssel und Codebücher. Die Briten konnten somit den gesamten Funkverkehr zwischen Dönitz und seinen U-Booten mitlesen. Der einzige Vorteil der Deutschen Kriegsmarine war jedoch, dass die Briten im Anfangsstadium noch sehr viele Stunden für die Entschlüsselung nur eines einzigen Funkspruches brauchten.
