Robert Stermscheg was born in Maribor, Yugoslavia, in 1956. His parents were of Austrian descent, and due to his father’s profession as an electrical engineer, moved to various countries in his early childhood. His father kept a steady supply of Karl May books to broaden his education and exposure to the developing world. The family moved to Canada in 1967 and settled in Manitoba. Robert was involved in hockey, chess, skiing, and flying, but always kept up his interest in the German language. His repertoire included about forty Karl May books, which he read over and over again. He developed a passion for sharing his love for these books and turned to searching for English translations. Robert retired from the Winnipeg police service in 2006, and now had the time and opportunity to pursue his dream of writing with purpose. His wife Toni suggested that he consider a translation project. She supported him with encouragement and volunteered to be a proofreader. Robert began his trans¬lation work with this volume, The Prussian Lieutenant, a classic tale of conflict between the French and German peoples during the Napoleonic War of 1814. Encouraged by the success of his first work, Robert continued with the second installment, The Marabout`s Secret, and followed up with the third, Buried Secrets. However, perhaps his most rewarding work to date has been writing his father`s memoir, POW #74324. Visit Robert’s website: www.robertstermscheg.com
