A fascination with words My lifelong fascination with stories began at the knees of masters. My grandfather, Jack Westheider was a racing pigeon fancier. Every Saturday in the racing season, a bunch of ‘Jackie’s’ old mates would gather in his backyard, by his cabbage patch, to await the arrival of his pigeons from exotically named places like Bundaberg and Gympie. With time on their hands, the yarns would start flowing, often with an impressionable young boy sitting cross-legged among the cabbages sucking in every word. Those old blokes knew how to tell a story all right! Their tall tales and true were undoubtedly the beginning of a lifelong love for stories well told and ultimately of my career as a scribbler. It’s no surprise that the leading character in my first book, Solly’s Way, was a story-telling swagman. Fortunately, my busy business life provided many wonderful opportunities, including travel. It also gave me the opportunity to write, at least for business purposes, and an appreciation of the power of words used in the right place and manner. As my days as Managing Director drew to a close, the urge to return to the story-telling craft became overwhelming. This time, I’d be the storyteller and I would now finally find out whether I had a way with words. It was inevitable that I’d write in a particular manner. For most of my adult life, I've been fascinated by the living history of the many places I managed to visit in my 40-odd year working life. Many of these become backdrops for my stories. Since then, I’ve been to these places and more in my books and hopefully taken, you, my readers with me. From the drought-ravaged outback of the disastrous 1890s for Solly's Way, to Angkor Wat for The Dreaming Stone or ‘Darlo’ (Darlinghurst) during the razor gang wars for Dark Angels. I’ve blended history with fiction so you can enjoy the journey and maybe even learn a bit on the way. I intend going to a lot more places before I’m done. I like to write of ‘intimate history’, history from the perspective of ordinary folk impacted by the events of the world around them. It’s these people who weave their world into my books and bring history to life. No superheroes here! You’re more likely to discover the adventures of a swagman, a horse breaker, a nurse, a refugee between the covers of my books. My characters laugh, love, hate and cry, just like us. My goal is for you to live a while with my characters and to give you a whole new perspective on history, one that lets you connect to it in a new and interesting way.
