'Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness' is the best-known phrase from the Declaration of Independence, one of the most important documents of the eighteenth century and the whole Enlightenment Age. Written by Thomas Jefferson, it is frequently evoked today as a shorthand for that idea we call the 'American Dream'. But this is a line with a surprising history. Rather than being uniquely American, the vision it encapsulates - of a free and happy world - owes a great deal to British thinkers too.

Books v Cigarettes is a funny and irreverent essay comparing the costs of reading to other forms of recreation including smoking. Originating from the experience of an editor friend who was firewatching during the Second World War, who was told by factory workers that they had no interest in literature because they could not afford books, the essay first appeared in Tribune in 1946.

'Decline of the English Murder' analyses the kinds of murders depicted in popular media during Orwell's life and why society of the time was obsessed with these grizzly crimes. Tribune published it on 15th February 1946, and Secker and Warburg republished it after his death in Shooting an Elephant and Other Essays in 1952.

"The Spike" and "A Hanging" are two essays written by George Orwell that deal with themes of institutional cruelty, powerlessness, and injustice. "The Spike" describes Orwell's experience of living in a spike, or homeless shelter, and the brutal conditions and dehumanizing treatment he witnessed there. The essay explores the plight of the poor and marginalized in society, as well as the indifference and cruelty of those in power. "A Hanging" describes Orwell's experience of witnessing a hanging during his time serving as a police officer in Burma.
