Newly promoted DCI Nick Dixon is stuck behind a desk when the peace of the Somerset countryside is shattered by a spate of sheep killings. He learns little there, except that the members are all outcasts from noble families.

Sherlock Holmes has retired to his farm on the Sussex Downs, whilst Dr. John Watson has become a GP in the Yorkshire Dales. Watson is struggling to deal with the first weeks of the COVID outbreak, yet Holmes discovers that an old enemy is about to carry out a terrible crime, right under Watson’s nose. It is down to the heroic Watson to save the day.

The body lying on its back before us was unquestionably that of the man who had attempted to kill Holmes and I with explosives at Glenbury Gardens. He wore the same dark clothing, although his hat was gone, and the hare lip was a livid scar on his pallid face. Strangely, it crossed my mind that what could be seen of his expression in death was softer than that he had worn in life.
