About this listen

An honest policeman, Sergeant Wigan, escorts a drunk man home one night to keep him out of trouble and, seeing his fine book collection, slowly falls into the gentle art of book collecting. Just as the friendship is blossoming, the policeman's book-collecting friend is murdered. To solve the mystery of why the victim was killed, and which of his rare books was taken, Wigan dives into the world of 'runners' and book collectors, where avid agents will gladly cut you for a first edition and then offer you a lift home afterwards.

Interesting lesser known title

Quite an interesting lesser known title of detective fiction genre. Not scintillating but it gives a good depiction of the seedy side of booksellers with an interesting array of characters. The protagonist is no holmesian genius but I don't think he was intended to be, just a middle of the road copper. The book does however touch on subjects such as the occult, morality, capital punishment and police procedure which is admirable. The plot seems to lose a bit near the end, but on the whole quite an interesting book.

An OK book

This is another from the British library crime classics, overall its not bad.
I have never heard of the author before and the story is set around book scouts or book buyers which is different.
A couple of the voices were nasal and annoying but not the worst narration I have heard.
Not the best in the crime classic series, but not the worst either.
