"Mephisto" erzählt die Geschichte des Schauspielers Hendrik Höfgen, von seinen Anfängen im Hamburger Künstlertheater 1926 bis zum Jahr 1936, als es Höfgen (in manchen Zügen unverkennbar Gustaf Gründgens) zum gefeierten Star des neuen Reiches gebracht hat. Höfgen geht dafür jedoch einen Teufelspakt ein und verrät die humanen Werte, für die er einst eintrat. "Mephisto" ist ein zeitkritisches Panorama der Zustände im Dritten Reich - mit deutlich satirischen Elementen -, eine Geschichte von Anpassung und Widerstand.

Nach Rollen jeglicher Couleur, in welchen er das Hamburger Publikum mit seiner Regie-, und Schauspielarbeit begeistert, sorgt er schließlich in Berlin für Furore und erreicht durch seine Darstellung des Faust den Gipfel seiner künstlerischen Produktivität.

Auch wenn Klaus Mann bestreitet, dass Gustav Gründgens das Vorbild für den Schauspieler Henrik Höfgen gewesen sei, sind die Übereinstimmungen doch unbestreitbar. Für den heutigen Leser spielt das Publikationsverbot für den Nymphenburger Verlag von 1966 auch keine Rolle mehr. Er kann sich ungehindert dem Genuss des Romans über den von Hermann Göring protegierten Schauspieler mit einstmaligen Sympathien für die proletarische Revolution hingeben.

Begonnen hatte er den Roman Anfang 1936 und im Mai desselben Jahres war das Manuskript bereits fertig. Kurz darauf erschien er in einer Pariser Zeitung als Vorabdruck. In der Hauptrolle glänzte der berühmte und ganz reale Schauspieler, Gustaf Gründgens, hier im Buch unter dem Namen Hendrik Höfgen benannt.
