  • FAQs About Our Kits
    May 24 2021

This week I introduce the newest member of our team - Amanda Carlisle, Distance Learning Specialist. Together, we are answering your frequently asked questions about our lab kits for remote science students, questions such as "My course starts in three weeks, can I still design a kit?" "Are these kits as rigorous as an on-campus lab experience?" "Can my students buy a kit with their financial aid?" and "Are the materials safe for at-home use?"

  • Virtual Lab Collaboration with University of Arizona Global Campus
    Mar 29 2021

Bringing science to life for online students, especially those in introductory non-majors courses, is challenging. How do you make students feel comfortable yet engaged in laboratory experiences? It was this and other questions that brought Clifford Blizard, a lead instructor at the University of Arizona Global Campus, to Carolina Distance Learning. A long-time customer, Clifford came to me with the idea for a novel type of virtual lab. One that would simultaneously immerse students in a real, underappreciated ecosystem, and give them greater confidence with lab reports, graphing and the scientific method. With nothing like it on the market, I was all in with this collaboration which resulted in more successes than we ever anticipated.
If you have questions for Clifford about his course or labs, you can reach him at clifford.blizard@uagc.edu.

  • COVID-19 Anniversary with Indiana University Northwest
    Mar 15 2021

One year ago, the COVID-19 pandemic forced institutions nationwide to take their classes online. Even their lab classes. But how do you successfully deliver lab experiences to your remote students? With many campuses still teaching virtually, and with online learning becoming increasingly popular, this question is the crux of this show and our mission at Carolina Distance Learning. On the anniversary of the first pandemic shutdowns, I interviewed two faculty members from Indiana University Northwest: Peter Avis, Associate Professor and Chair of Biology, and Kevin Kennedy, a microbiology lecturer, to get their feedback and reflections on the last year.
