Avi: In this chapter Wentworth offers Anne his umbrella. Do you think this is something he would have done earlier in the book? What does that signify about Wentworth and his own journey?

You have only knowledge enough of the language to translate at sight these inverted, transposed, curtailed Italian lines, into clear, comprehensible, elegant English. You need not say anything more of your ignorance. Here is complete proof.”

Ghenet: 1. Why do you think Louisa and Captain Benwick fell in love with each other? 2. We see Anne with members of the upper class and members of the lower class (by the Elliots’ standards) but where is it that you think Anne is most comfortable and most herself?

Emily: What point is Anne making about Benwick's character when talking about his change of heart, and is she doing him justice?

Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include the purpose widowers play in this story, what's shifted between Anne and Wentworth, Bath as a setting for their meeting.

Funniest Quote: "Anne sighed and blushed and smiled, in pity and disdain, either at her friend or herself. The part which provoked her most, was that in all this waste of foresight and caution, she should have lost the right moment for seeing whether he saw them."

Questions Moving Forward: What happened with Wentworth and Louisa? What will happen at the concert?

Who wins the chapters? Anne and Wentworth

Leigh: Up until now Anne has been presented as being unattractive to the other characters, having “lost her bloom.” Now suddenly in Lyme she catches the notice of Mr. Elliot and Captain Benwick. What - if anything - has changed about Anne?

A Listener: What do you think Jane Austen is telling us about Bath, and from that, what do you think Anne’s Bath experience will be like?

Ghenet: What are your thoughts on Captain Benwick and Cousin Elliot? Why do you think they’re doing for the story at this point?

Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include Mr. Elliot's reaction to Anne, Anne's transformation, the accident and what it does to the story, what it teaches us about the characters, the difference between persuadable characters and resolute characters, and Anne's separation from the rest of the party.

Funniest Quote: “I wish,” said Henrietta, very well pleased with her companion, “I wish Lady Russell lived at Uppercross, and were intimate with Dr. Shirley. I have always heard of Lady Russell as a woman of the greatest influence with everybody! I always look upon her as able to persuade a person to anything! I am afraid of her, as I have told you before, quite afraid of her, because she is so very clever; but I respect her amazingly, and wish we had such a neighbor at Uppercross.”
