  • Persuasion Chapter 20
    Nov 19 2024

It's the day of the concert! Anne and Wentworth finally get a chance to talk. Anne is CERTAIN that Wentworth loves her, Mr. Elliot makes his intentions clear, Captain Wentworth is JEALOUS, and Molly is shipping Elliot and Anne.

Topics discussed include some clarification on marriage rules, the possibility of recovering from a broken heart, whomst Elliot's friend might be, why Elliot's proposal is a surprise, and whether Anne would accept if Wentworth proposed now.

    Glossary of Terms and Phrases:

contiguous (adj.): next or together in sequence.

Glossary of People, Places, and Things: Revenge of the Sith Opera House, the Bolshoi, Curb Your Enthusiasm

    Patron Study Questions:

Avi: In this chapter Wentworth offers Anne his umbrella. Do you think this is something he would have done earlier in the book? What does that signify about Wentworth and his own journey?

Ghenet: What do you think Anne and Wentworth’s conversation (about Lyme, about Benwick and Louisa etc) tells us about what he’s feeling (not just what Anne thinks he’s feeling - is she a reliable narrator in this moment?)

Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include what would change is Wentworth professed his love to Anne, Sir Walter's opinion of Wentworth, how Elliot has heard of Anne before and whether he knew she was coming to Bath, and whose team we're on.

Funniest Quote: “Yes, yes, I see you are. I see you know nothing of the matter. You have only knowledge enough of the language to translate at sight these inverted, transposed, curtailed Italian lines, into clear, comprehensible, elegant English. You need not say anything more of your ignorance. Here is complete proof.”

Questions Moving Forward: Why did Elliot come to Bath? If Wentworth proposed to Anne now, would she accept?

Who wins the chapters? Mr. Elliot

WE HAVE A PROPOSAL! Louisa and Benwick are in love and the Crofts come to Bath. Who else comes to Bath? WENTWORTH! Anne runs into him in a shop and he offers her his umbrella. Steamy. Plus, she and Lady Russell pass him in the street.

Topics discussed include what the heck happened between Wentworth and Louisa, grumpy/sunshine pairings, men in mourning, Gay Street, Mrs. Clay's potential ulterior motives, Elizabeth's shunning of Wentworth, Wentworth's jealousy, well-hung curtains, and our band kid days.

    Glossary of Terms and Phrases:

chair (n): A portable chair with a detachable roof, carried by two men.

    descried (v): caught sight of

Glossary of People, Places, and Things: Eponine, The Holiday, House in the Cerulean Sea

    Patron Study Questions:

Avi: Earlier in the book Wentworth, clearly thinking of Anne, told Louisa that he liked firm characters. Now Louisa has changed her affection to Benwick. What do you think Wentworth’s reaction will be?

Ghenet: 1. Why do you think Louisa and Captain Benwick fell in love with each other? 2. We see Anne with members of the upper class and members of the lower class (by the Elliots’ standards) but where is it that you think Anne is most comfortable and most herself?

Emily: What point is Anne making about Benwick's character when talking about his change of heart, and is she doing him justice?

Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include the purpose widowers play in this story, what's shifted between Anne and Wentworth, Bath as a setting for their meeting.

Funniest Quote: "Anne sighed and blushed and smiled, in pity and disdain, either at her friend or herself. The part which provoked her most, was that in all this waste of foresight and caution, she should have lost the right moment for seeing whether he saw them."

Questions Moving Forward: What happened with Wentworth and Louisa? What will happen at the concert?

Who wins the chapters? Anne and Wentworth

    Patron Study Questions:

Zamzam: Now that we’ve seen Anne interact with both her sisters and have a deeper understanding of those relationships , how do you think Anne’s dynamic within her household affects her ability to be persuaded? And what does it mean that she is accepting the attentions of someone who is desired to be her sister’s match?

Emily: We have a transition chapter! In P&P Lizzie went to Kent to see Charlotte in Kent, in S&S Elinor heads off to London - what are you expecting / hoping for from Anne's time in Bath?

Avi: In these chapters we have three very striking examples of women from different classes, Lady Dalrymple, Mrs. Clay, and Mrs. Smith. What do Anne’s reactions to each of them say about Anne’s view of class?

Becca's Study Questions: Topics discussed include Mr. Elliot and Anne's class conversation, inconvenient love, Elliot's intentions, Mrs. Smith's role in the story, and Anne's feelings about Elliot.

Funniest Quote: "I am no matchmaker, as you well know."
