I hope this letter finds you doing well on this beautiful fall day. Here in the great state of Kansas, we are having crisp fall air in the morning followed by a wonderful ray of sunshine in the evening. I love this time of year. It reminds me of God’s beauty and that change is necessary to get through the next part of life.

Today’s episode, while comical, will truly empower you to use the policies and guidelines your school already has in place. While some schools are being overrun with dogs and cats entering their classrooms, I find it very crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of all those that are around them. Students have allergies, animals are unpredictable, animals carry diseases. As a nurse and educator you should stand firm for the safety and well-being of your students, teachers, and staff. Correct health inspections, immunizations, and personnel should be used when animals are in the classroom.

Today, I close out the 3-part series on the Nuremberg Code by focusing on the 10 principles of the code and how those 10 principles directly correlate to our ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. School nurses and educators have ethical responsibilities to our students. We are both responsible for the health and well-being of our students as well as academic education and cognitive development. Yes, we each come at these important tasks from a different angle, but we are all striving for student safety and success. The purpose of the Nuremberg Code was patient safety and success. It is time to make the Nuremberg Code great again, better yet, it is time to make the Code of Ethics for Nurses great again. This week, I challenge you to read the ANA Code of Ethics. Reflect on how this directly impacts each encounter you have with a student or fellow co-worker. How can you be a better nurse or educator by implementing the code of ethics?

The Nuremberg Trials, which took place after World War II, were a series of military tribunals held to prosecute prominent leaders of Nazi Germany for their roles in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other atrocities committed during the Holocaust and the war. The Nuremberg Trials directly shaped medical ethics that has a direct correlation and impact on the field of nursing to this day. The Nursing Code of Ethics incorporates principles of respect for human dignity, patient autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence, which align with the ethical principles articulated in the Nuremberg Code. The Nuremberg Trials served as a stark reminder of the atrocities that can occur when ethical principles are ignored or violated in healthcare and research settings. The Nuremberg Trials underscored the need to protect vulnerable populations, including prisoners, minorities, and those incapable of giving informed consent. Nursing ethics also emphasize the protection and advocacy for vulnerable patients, including children, and those with diminished decision-making capacity. The lessons from Nuremberg contribute to a heightened awareness of these responsibilities, especially as we care for the nation’s children. 

Let’s make Nuremberg great again.

The next two months have a lot of uncertainty as fear of potential lock downs and mandates begin circulating in the news. Like a blank canvas, the next few weeks hold within them the potential for both challenges and triumphs. As you begin navigating discussions, policy changes, mandates, and all other potential harms, remember that you have an opportunity to redeem yourself. 

Getting a second chance is of paramount importance as it offers the opportunity for personal growth and redemption. Mistakes are inevitable in life, and a second chance allows individuals to learn from their errors and make amends. Never be forced to look at your children through a mask or hold them while they cry out in pain due to a needle in their arm from an unneeded vaccination. You are about to be given an opportunity to rewrite the narrative, to mend what was once fractured, and to paint vibrant strokes on that canvas. 

Today, and over the next few weeks, I am going to embark on the “Make Nuremberg Great Again” series in order for you to have the education and resources needed to speak truth and logic into the covid nonsense. Our children are worth fighting for. Do not let this second chance go to waste. Perhaps, this is God’s opportunity for you to repent, make amends, and seek him.

Wokeism is working diligently to re-make America. It’s doing this by lurching onto our children and transforming them right in front of us. Think of a thick morning fog moving between the trees, its moving between our children as fast as it can. Wokeism is a religion, and we must stop it in its tracks. As school nurses and teachers we must stand our ground and fight.

I have spent the past weekend putting a special twist on Dr. Seuss’s “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” As you know the book holds a special place in my heart. While I am no Dr. Seuss and a terrible artist, I’ll spare you the drawings for now. I hope that you are able to embark on a journey through the whimsical verses and that you are instantly transported to the many decisions you have to make. 

Dr. Seuss’s book offers comfort during challenging times and acknowledges the inevitability of setbacks, doubts, and waiting periods. In the end, the book encourages readers to rise above the difficulties and believe in their own capabilities. On the other hand, Dr. Steele’s twisted version is sure to cause confusion.
