Episode 11 - Nuremberg Part 1

  • Summary

  • The Nuremberg Trials, which took place after World War II, were a series of military tribunals held to prosecute prominent leaders of Nazi Germany for their roles in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other atrocities committed during the Holocaust and the war. The Nuremberg Trials directly shaped medical ethics that has a direct correlation and impact on the field of nursing to this day. The Nursing Code of Ethics incorporates principles of respect for human dignity, patient autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence, which align with the ethical principles articulated in the Nuremberg Code. The Nuremberg Trials served as a stark reminder of the atrocities that can occur when ethical principles are ignored or violated in healthcare and research settings. The Nuremberg Trials underscored the need to protect vulnerable populations, including prisoners, minorities, and those incapable of giving informed consent. Nursing ethics also emphasize the protection and advocacy for vulnerable patients, including children, and those with diminished decision-making capacity. The lessons from Nuremberg contribute to a heightened awareness of these responsibilities, especially as we care for the nation’s children.

    Let’s make Nuremberg great again.
