    What is addiction and why do people have it?

    If you’re interested in knowing more about why addiction isn’t a conscious choice listen to my guest this week Dr Nzinga Harrison, a board-certified physician with specialties in psychiatry and addiction medicine.

    She is also the chief medical officer and cofounder of Eleanor Health, an innovative mental health and addiction treatment company. She holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the Morehouse School of Medicine and sits on the Practice Management and Regulatory Affairs Committee for the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

    In her book Un-Addiction she draws on peer-reviewed research and decades of addiction treatment expertise, to reveal the factors that predict one’s risk for addiction.

    Dt Nzinga helps us understand that addiction is a chronic illness, like diabetes or asthma; that our risk for addiction comes with our biology and heritability, childhood experience, physical environment, discrimination, and cultural influence, and that it requires treatment and deserves compassion.

    Dr Nzinga shows us that we can undo stigma surrounding addiction, and uncover critical conversations that could end the epidemic.
