Summary

Molly Murphy Sullivan's husband, Daniel, a police captain in turn-of-the-century New York City, is in a precarious position. The new police commissioner wants him off the force altogether. So when Daniel's offered an assignment from John Wilkie, head of the Secret Service, he's eager to accept.

Molly can't draw any details of the assignment out of him, even where he'll be working. But when she spots him in San Francisco during a movie news segment, she starts to wonder if he's in even more danger than she had first believed. And then she receives a strange and cryptic letter from him, leading her to conclude that he wants her to join him in San Francisco. Molly knows that if Daniel's turning to her rather than John Wilkie or his contacts in the police force, something must have gone terribly wrong. What can she do for him that the police can't? Especially when she doesn't even know what his assignment is?

Embarking on a cross-country journey with her young son, Molly can't fathom what's in store for her, but she knows it might be dangerous - in fact, it might put all of their lives at risk.

Time of Fog and Fire

A brilliant story, with many mystery to solve not knowing if she will ever make it. Read with great feeling by Nicola Barber.

What happened to the historical note?

I really enjoy the Molly Murphy mysteries, even though Daniel can be a bit annoying at times, and some of Molly’s decisions are ridiculous and clearly done for the sake of story progression. Such is the case involving baby Liam in this story.

I’ve warmed to Nicola Barber’s narration (ignoring some of the mis-pronunciation) as each main character has a distinct voice (although Gus & Sid seem interchangeable to me).

Being transported to a time and place alien to modern day Britain is refreshing. Especially when the story lines include real historical fact. I didn’t realise how much I looked forward to the epilogue of “this actually happened…here’s some facts…”, until this book didn’t have one!
I was hoping to hear some facts about the California earthquake of 1906.

Entertaining insight into USA in early 20th C

I just love this series - both entertaining and educational. Rhys Bowen brings all the characters to life with her witty insightful prose and Nicola Barber does the same with her wonderful voice . A lovely way to learn more about early 20th century New York and San Francisco.
