About this listen
A richly textured, darkly evocative fantasy set in a beautifully realised fantasy world, the Saramyr trilogy tells the story of an empire that rules over a land being overwhelmed by evil.
An evil that comes from within the empire's centre, a sect of magicians close to the throne intent on killing any child born with magical powers. But now the empress has given birth to just such a child and revolution is brewing.
Akin to the works of Robin Hobb, this is a hugely involving fantasy set in a world with an enticing oriental flavour.

Enjoyable and good fun
Having finished the Tales of the Ketty Jay series and absolutely loving it, I thought it would be worth checking out some of Mr Woodings' work.
Whilst this is completely different in terms of story and tone, it is still an engaging tale set in a rich and interesting world.
The narration by Imogen Church is fantastic; however, this is where my only slight issue with this audio book should be mentioned.
Frequently throughout the story, the narration drops to a whisper. Whilst this is always in context to the story, it is almost impossible to hear what is being said.
Multiple times whilst listening, the following pattern of events occurred:
- I turn up the volume very high to hear what was being said when the narration drops to a whisper.
- The narration returns to a normal speach volume.
- I jump out of my skin, almost blow up my speakers and have to change my underwear.
That aside, fantastic audio book and worth a listen.

Phenomenal High Fantasy Adventure
The story is a tale of women who are powerful in different ways and for different reasons they struggle for equality in a world which has been indoctrinated to abhor magic by the so called Weavers. the Weavers are an ancient brotherhood of grotesque men who have irreversibly wormed their way into the everyday lives of the ever scheming ruling houses and as a result; the very fabric of society.
Saramyr is a world which is a living, breathing high fantasy world at its finest. It is steeped in lore and tradition and sprinkled with far East Asian motifs which creates some familiarity. The setting, from the spirits of the earth to the moons in the sky are as very much a part of the story as the unique cast of characters.
To top it off, the narrator is so enthusiastic and breathes life into every single word she reads. It’s always so refreshing hearing a novel read in somebody else’s voice and this goes above even my greatest expectations.

Not a Book I would Recommend
II made it to Chapter 6 before I gave up. I don't know if the narration or the storyline was worse. Having listened to previous Chris Wooding books, I found this such a disappointment.
