About this listen

Scorio will rise from the ashes to conquer the 10 layers of hell.

Reborn without memories, Scorio learns that he is a Great Soul, a legendary defender of the ancient city of Bastion. That within the hallowed halls of the Academy and under the stern eyes of the underworld’s greatest instructors he will enjoy enormous privilege, rediscover unique and wondrous powers, and one day return to the millennium-old battle against their infernal foes.

Until he is betrayed. Singled out and sentenced to die for crimes he can't remember, Scorio is hurled to his doom - and forgotten.

But from even the dimmest spark an inferno may one day rage.

Clawing his way back from oblivion, Scorio vows to return to the Academy at any cost. To emerge from the ruins and within those golden walls defeat his elite classmates in a quest to ascend the ranks and change the course of history. For only then will he learn about his forgotten past and why his enemies have rightly feared him since the day he was reborn.

Narrator is great, still trying to guess if he plays all the characters. Either way it’s great

Has potential bar the horrendous pacing.

I enjoyed the story and concept, it's just the pacing is ridiculously slow. At point it felt like the story was not progressing, it was just spinning it's wheels with random tangents and repetitive points drilled over and over.

There appears to be a huge world out there but we don't get anywhere close to getting out into it. This is more like one of the infinite chapter web novels where it takes 200 chapters for the main character to power up a single level. Found myself skipping chapters and feel like I didn't miss anything.

Maybe a little long, but great story and narration

Very enjoyable. Might have dragged on a little bit, I think a few chapters worth could have been culled and the story would still have been just as enjoyable.

Nick P was a fantastic narrator, as he always is. Clear and unobtrusive to the enjoyment of the book.

Slow burner but it gets the job done

This book is extremely good, the MC and the side characters are very entertaining and show great progression. The book itself is a slow one, at times it feels like far too much detail has been included particularly when you want action. However, dont let that deter you. This book is 5* the world is interesting, the ability system is unique and the MC actually has a challenging experience. I can't wait for book 2 to be released.

A solid title with great series potential.

This is two, possibly three books in one. It's a slow burner that does a good job of character development and pinning actions to motivations, with many ups and downs. You'll find yourself sympathising, empathising, critiquing and frowning along with the characters. It's honestly a good, solid story. The narration is probably the best I've seen on Audible, so nicely done, Nick Podehl. You made this book all the more enjoyable.

Flaws wise... Well, the only real flaw I can point to definitely about the story would be the perpensions that occur in loops, saying the same thing several different ways before moving on. It can be immersion-breaking in moments where you really want to find out what happens next, causing that moment to suffer. I have seen far worse examples of this, however, and it's not enough to react fatally.

Overall, I immensely enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next instalment.

all you could ask for In a book

Great storyline never a dull moment the author doesn't leave out any detail not one of those books where the main character is overpowered Scorpio has to work his way from nothing to gain power

again as you probably know nick podehl did a brilliant job the author could not picked a better guy as he comes with his own following including myself

definitely can't wait for book 2 love the fact that these books go on for ages 10/10 for me
