A BEST DEBUT OF 2024 BY BB

The instant Sunday Times bestseller

Yorkshire, 1979

Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South.

Because of the murders.

Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn't an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv's mum stopped talking.
Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all?

So, Miv and Sharon decide to make a list: a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. People they know. People they don't.

But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families - and between each other - than they ever thought possible.

What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?

Engaging but some glitches

Engaging narrative and storytelling, but some things jarred for me. I understand that the story uses a child's perspective, but I felt that the writing was too simplistic at times. There was also too much crow-barring in of things related to the era, especially songs and a repetition of some similes/imagery. I would have preferred a bit less (barely credible) drama and a bit more sophistication in the writing. However, clearly a talented writer with a lot of potential. The audio track was annoying as parts of some sentences were repeated (a glitch I take it) - this happened several times throughout the novel.

Evocative, amusing, horrifying and emotional

Not my usual read but I have been so moved by this book! Beautiful, sad, funny, ugly … loved every word. Haven’t cried reading a book since Watership Down….

Loved it

It bought so many memories for me. I was born in Yorkshire and am of an age that I remember lots of things. The story was narrated beautifully and was spoken like the main character I imagined.
A great story of family, friendship, racism, bullying and so much more. It bought back the memory of having a Wagon Wheel and a Beano and Dandy comic as a treat on a Friday night when my parents got their wages. I look forward to the next book by Jennie Godfrey,

Relatable, emotional and intelligent read

This gripped me from the start. It’s so well written in an easily relatable style the author uses evocative metaphors throughout. Whilst it’s uplifting in the end it does describe some difficult issues so not for those who may be feeling delicate at the time of reading. I’d wholeheartedly recommend.

Loved it!

Captured the angst and naivety of being young as well as serving as a reminder of a seventies childhood. Author did a great job of weaving in a political and historical perspective of the era. Enjoyed the complexities of the friendships and relationships.

Very enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. It’s thought that occasionally the main characters reflections weren’t realistic, but that didn’t stop my enjoyment.

What I did find highly frustrating was the poor editing of this production- quite often sentences were repeated. This is careless and a shame.

Good Coming of Age Novel

I enjoyed the different voices used in the novel, Miv was believable as a young teenager. Well structured.

Beautiful and poignant

An insightful child’s view of a different time, set during terrifying time. Describing so clearly the resilience of love and goodness. Loved it.
