A BEST DEBUT OF 2024 BY BB
The instant Sunday Times bestseller
Yorkshire, 1979
Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South.
Because of the murders.
Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn't an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv's mum stopped talking.
Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all?
So, Miv and Sharon decide to make a list: a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. People they know. People they don't.
But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families - and between each other - than they ever thought possible.
What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?

Brilliant storytelling, fantastic characters and plot
A great book that brought back memories of growing up in the 70s and 80s. Miv and Sharon are brilliantly drawn characters and the story of a coming of age at a time of much social change is already a classic. What a debut!

A moving story about intertwined characters
Talented writing ...the way the characters are portrayed and their relationships intertwined...as the main protagonist tries to make sense of the people and their behaviours and what is unsaid within the community.

captivating
wonderful narration and captivating story. It took me right back to the 1970s when I was a child, though I don't remember much about the murders, Miv and Sharon's story were also my childhood. Very nostalgic story.

Outstanding novel
Growing up in South Yorkshire the Ripper was an omnipresent evil in our lives. I was the same age as the protagonist and this book brought back so many feelings, prejudices and memories which I experienced. The attention to detail is brilliant and I cannot recommend this book enough. The casts’ narration was excellent and brought it to life. Thank you!

Beautiful and moving
Wonderful narrators, very well written and although I was born just after the time when the story was set, I could really relate to the times. Thought provoking, sad and touching.

Touching and thought-provoking
This was a wonderful book written about a terrible time in my local history. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this! Each character was read so well and the different story lines were fantastic

Really well read.
An easy listen and a hard-warming story. The time just flew by listening to it. Felt like I was there seeing the story in real time.

A beautiful story
The story is told in such a way that, despite the characters living in a time where emotions and weakness weren’t allowed, you feel for them what they’re almost not allowed to feel.
Even the hardest of characters, such as Auntie Jean or Mr Ware, have a tenderness to them which makes them accessible and loveable.
