THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
CHOSEN BY WATERSTONES AS ONE OF THEIR BEST CRIME & THRILLER BOOKS OF 2024

'As a comedian, Bob Mortimer spins a shaggy-dog story like nobody else, and this is a rollicking old-school yarn' The Guardian

‘Mortimer’s verbal specificity and off-kilter humour will keep his fans chuckling’ The Times

WARNING - this book includes: heavy crimes, car journeys, dreadfulness, large fruits, romance, planning applications, and a lot of pie.

Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down.

But sinister forces are gathering in a cloud of launderette scented-vape smoke, and the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.

All Gary wants is a happy life. But he also wants to be alive to enjoy it…

Editorial Review

A Mortimer fan is born
Truth: I’m new to the Bob Mortimer game. As I’ve gotten more into UK comedy this year, it’s been nice discovering legendary talent with full catalogues of work to catch up on and get acquainted with. The comedian and author’s latest novel, The Hotel Avocado, is everything you want it to be – funny, smart, compelling. As a newly minted Mortimer fan, I found it was a great place to start digging into his prolific body of work. — Aaron S., Audible Editor

A graceful ode to pies

I liked the addition of the new voices and the how Bob has come into his voice in the first book the first hour or so was flat but came to life after that in this audio he was raring from the get go. Chapter 41 (Emily) around 10:08 you can hear a squeak of a chair the only lapse in production lol but besides my personal gripes this is a throughly good cheerful listen I do hope both books will be made for a tv adaptation with Kathy Burke playing grace

That's good to know, Gary.

If you enjoyed The Satsuma Complex you'll also love this. I read and listen to all sorts of books, and this is on the light-hearted side of my palette, but that is not a criticism. It's an excellent way to enjoy your commute, dog walk or dishwasher duties. Especially dishwasher duties. It is such a pleasure to have Bob narrating the story, a major motivation to buy the audiobook. I love his accents, especially Mr Sequence. That's good to know. The voices he uses for the squirrel and the pigeon are very much in the same vane as the voice I use for my dog, especially when he is asking me for beef. So, why don't you think around that?

Brilliant use of my time

Fantastic story, superb narration- funny and life affirming. Makes me feel that I’m not the only madman who imagines animals talking (and give them voices) 😉😉😁😁

Fantastic book!

Gripped from beginning to end! Funny, intriguing and has you second guessing all the time. Twists and turns that will have you grasping for a sick bag, if you suffer from motion sickness like myself… that’s good to know!

Never let you down.

Just finished The Hotel Avocado and loved it. Caught myself laughing out loud many times through the book.
Favourite characters were the squirrel and pigeon.

Well don Bob.
