Summary

When a local quarry yields a garroted body with bad dental work and toes tattooed in Cyrillic, Joe Gunther figures it's a Russian Mafia killing, rare as that might be in Vermont. But it's so very...tidy. So very...professional. Then the CIA calls, inviting Gunther down to Washington for some friendly "assistance" with his case. Suddenly he's caught up in a shadowy game of cross and double-cross - manipulated by cynical, cold warriors who don't seem to have gotten the memo - and Gunther soon realizes that he's a pawn both sides are willing to sacrifice.

Another great Joe Gunther adventure

This series is great, good plot lines, mix of characters, twists and turns all against a backdrop of a state I'm unlikely to visit but now know a little better. The narration neatly brings the story together. What is not to like?

First disappointing book in the serie

It started well. A Russian mobster and the CIA involvement looked promising. Then it just degenerated into a too convoluted, too unbelievable storyline which stopped being enjoyable, so hig was tu temptation to throw the book in the bin (metaphorically) at every new twist and turn. What makes this serie so enjoyable is the whole cosy context of Vermont and lovingly described places and people. Please keep it this way!

Very satisfying

Who would have thought so much could happen in a small, sleepy, Vermont town. This book had a lot of references to dates but it still didn’t make it seem “dated” which I prefer rather than being blatantly set in a particular period.
Oh, and “brewch” I assume it means brooch! (I don’t know how it’s spelt in the book, actually I’m being unkind, I think Americans call them broach sometimes!) But I still can’t see how that is pronounced “brewch “. Yes, I need to get out more.

Compelling story

Very convoluted and hard to keep track of but interesting all the same. Some sections nail biting

A good listen

Archer Mayor's books get better all the time. This book is well paced no unnecessary dialogue or slow paced observations. You can see how Archer Mayor grows with each story. This one makes me download the next.

Best one yet!

This was good.. Gripped me from start to
finish. The cold War arrives in brat, and I could not have been happier! Well narrated as usual.

very good but not great

Very good but not great means that on its own this book was well worth the listen but when compared to others in the series it just wasn't as good but as a part of the whole series it's still worth a listen. Still fun so on to the next.

Hard to follow

I didn't enjoy this story as much as previous ones. I couldn't keep up with the cast of characters or where they were operating. I'll still listen to the next one, though.

Still Good

This is a brilliant series, Joe is a great character, this time up against the ruskys, very good but will his luck run out, on to the next one.
