About this listen

Over the years investigator Joe Gunther has battled drug pushers and corporate swindlers, grappled with environmental conspirators, and foiled gangs and home invaders. But while usually successful in his fight for the future of the small town of Brattleboro, Vermont, Gunther hasn't always come out on top.

Thirty years earlier, store owner Klaus Oberfeldt was robbed and beaten senseless. When Klaus died six months later, a case of assault and battery became first-degree murder. The guilty man eventually appeared to be a well-known, small-time crook, but enough time had elapsed for him to vanish. Gunther, distracted by his wife's losing struggle with cancer in the same hospital where Klaus was slipping from life, did something that would plague him for the rest of his career: He let the case go cold, burying it in the past along with his private sorrows.

Now serendipitously reopened, the Oberfeldt investigation forces Gunther to revisit ancient history and open old wounds. Torn between righting the past and confronting his demons, the veteran cop faces the most personal and dangerous case of his career. For somewhere on the idyllic Brattleboro streets stalks a long-lost murderer who never quite disappeared - and with Joe's renewed interest, now has good reason to kill again.

Great Listen

Back to Joe as the main character really works again. This is a much better book than the last. It isn't gripping but it is an interesting build up on a cold case. Joe and the team don't develop anymore as characters but that doesn't matter as the story is a good one.

One of my favourites

I don't think anyone would get this far into a series if they could pick holes in any part of the production. For some reason I found this to be one of my favourite Joe Gunther stories to date.

I find Taylorson's narration of Gunther in particular, just spot on. He's becoming like an old friend.

Back to his best

This book has renewed my enthusiasm with GB. The depth of emotions on this challenging story was very well handled and made relationships real.

Not the usual story

I found this case to be a detour off the normal big gang/crime syndicate track no saving the world for a change but an enjoyable procedural no long chases or showdowns in disused buildings and no visits to casualty either. By the way how old is Joe ? Didn’t he fight in Korea

Another masterpiece

Yet again the twists and turns leave you wanting more. The characters seem to change with each story. Looking forward to the next one

Brilliant

Once again, a fabulous book read superbly as always. I'm amazed at how brilliantly the narrator distinguishes between the various voices, especially the female characters that don't seem to be spoken by a man at all!

Very depressing book

I almost didn’t continue with this book as right from the start Jo is wallowing in depression and self pity. But as the two previous books had been so good I continued. I like the other characters Lester, Willie, Sam and the forensic team are still working hard without much appreciation from their boss, I wanted to know the outcome. Despite always managing to get potential witnesses killed as he always does (don’t know why he doesn’t get Willie to shadow him on these visits) then they could prevent these murders. I do give Jo credit for being his persistent dogged self to find the evidence he thinks is there, although you might die of old age waiting for him to find it. I am not unsympathetic to his grief at the loss of his wife. I am a cancer patient myself and it changes the lives of all those around me. Maybe Jo just needs to go home shut himself off from the world and get on with his wood work whilst living on junk food. Wonder what next book will bring.

Politics blah blah blah

Sick to death with politically driven story lines dressed up as police procedurals. When I read a book I want to get away from reality, not to have it forcibly shoved down my neck constantly. I could cope with his earlier books but it's so in your face in this one that I'm giving up the series. As for Saint Gail, you don't understand how badly I want Joe to do the dirty on her with the barmaid!
I'm a bit confused as to how old Joe is meant to be though, a bit of wishful thinking on the authors side maybe?
