Archer Mayor
About this listen
Joe Gunther, a Brattleboro, Vermont cop, is the head of the new Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI), a joint task force charged with statewide responsibility for major crimes. In The Marble Mask, the VBI's first case takes the force north to Stowe, where a 50-year-old corpse has turned up in a crevasse on Mt. Mansfield. Some of the more interesting minor characters in author Archer Mayor's long-running series about the amiable elder sleuth make return appearances here as Joe's teammates - like one-armed Willy, a former wife-beater who's now playing footsie with Sammie Martens, one of Joe's favorite colleagues.
When the frozen stiff turns out to have been a big-time Canadian crime boss named Jean Deschamps who disappeared after World War II, Joe and his gang cross the border to work with the Mounties, the Surete, and the local cops in Sherbrooke, where Deschamps' son Marcel is involved in a turf war with the Hell's Angels and a rival gang of thugs. Old secrets and intrigues come to light while an intricate plan to frame a dying man for a half-century-old crime forms an interesting puzzle that's not fully revealed until the very end.

Love this series !
This has to be the most addictive series of books I've ever listened to . Every book seems to have me more invested in the stories and the characters. The reader is superb and gives every voice its own personality. On to the next !

Love Joe Gunther
Felt the story was too long and I got confused more than once trying to follow the storyline.

A good audiobook, enjoyable, and involving a variety of black market criminal behaviour weaving historical and modern day "facts" and how the assuming identities of people who have passed away in combat.

Great writing and narration, clumsy storyline
I love the characters, the way Mayor write, the narrator. I appreciate the author 's effort to find a different plot in different setting for each novel... but the storyline starts to suffer as a result. Too twisted, too bizarre, I' d rather Mayor came back down to earth and wrote solid, believable stories.

Good
I thought this was another good story, was a bit shorter than the previous books but I think was about an hour too long.

Please give Jo Gunther a desk job
I liked this story, lots of twists and turns. Liked that the new team included Sami and Willy, as a consultant. Hope He sticks with Sami and is going to go back into the team.
Jo was as accident prone as ever, he needs to leave pursuits to his team, he is a liability, he can do the planning. Wasn’t long before poor long suffering Gail was at his bedside again. He is never grateful either to Gail or his team. I still notice that he doesn’t use the words Please and Thank you much…….

excellent Read
All the ingredients of a great detective mystery. let the wee grey cells get puzzling. Quite nice to have didfferentbpolice characters but felt Sammy was left out in the cold a bit. (Pardon the pun - if you read the book!)

Not good
Sadly I returned, so I don’t know what happened because I just couldn’t care, I don’t want history or geography lessons, I don’t need them. Very disappointing.

Like 60 minute episode
This felt like a good story to begin with but dragged on far too long. Situations seemed contrived to get you to the next part. Being stuck in the snow and the train incident stick out as oddly written given how good the author is. This feels like a 60 minute episode of a police drama made into 8hours...
