About this listen

An exciting standalone Cthulhu Casebooks narrative, a thrilling tale of mystery and dread, from the New York Times bestselling author.

It’s 1929 and an aging Dr. John Watson, conscious of his imminent demise, finally sits down to write a fresh chronicle disclosing the true events behind his published accounts of Sherlock Holmes’s exploits. In these pages, Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart companion encounter reanimated corpses in Highgate Cemetery; a very different, though ever elusive, Irene Adler; tales of madness and murder in the frozen wastes of the north; grotesque organic machines; and much more. Each case brings the illustrious pair ever closer to the dramatic and terrifying truth about the mysterious aliens, the Mi-Go, and their plans for Earth …

another one for The Strand

Consistently enjoy these, as I have always felt the Sherlock Holmes world of foggy Victorian London, lends itself so well to Lovecraftian stories.
In some ways, even better than New England in my opinion.
But, then again, until the age of 16, I always thought, the Dunwich Horror was based in my local Suffolk village of the same name, so I guess it all makes sense.
Narration as good as always, story as good as always. As ever, a bit unnecessarily descriptive at times but I'm used to it by now.

The only thing that was a bit of a brief stumbling block was in the first 5mins.
If you must, its "breakdown" dear author.
I think a mental break, would be 2 weeks 'aving it large!', on the busy side of Ibiza!

And for a first episode of mental illness, generally, it would have been admission under Sec 2 of the Mental Health Act. Not 3.
Sorry, been a MH nurse for 25 years, and these things do niggle me.
Best option would have just said, admitted under the mental health act, got on with the story.
However, overall, another one to add to my collection. Cheers

Brilliant end to a brilliant series

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every book by James Lovegrove and this was a fantastic end to the series. Equally so, Dennis Kleineman is one of my favourite narrators and I actively look out for his work, highly recommend the book.

readers chameleotic voice

superbly read story that did bring me back in time and vividly painted a image off ye olde England and genleman detective yarn with gripping supernatural twist. Verily a magnificent capstone for a very enjoyable series

Good conclusion

Leaves door open for more SH stories, but don't think so in this series. Good if not a bit sad conclusion

What a fantastic book!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Sherlock Holmes written by James Lovegrove. His style of writing is fantastic, and captured my attention fully, which is something not all authors do. This book, like all of its predecessors, was very well written, and brought closure to my mind and answers to many questions I still had from previous books. I think mixing Sherlock Holmes with a fantasy element has made it a great series, especially for a fan of both fantasy and Holmes such as myself.

I also really enjoy Denis Kleinmann's voice, which I find soothing and interesting at the same time, never becoming dull or boring.

A great ending to the series

I’m a big fan of this author’s work, and I hope although the Lovecraft crossover series is ending, that there will still be more SH books from Lovegrove.
I really enjoy the casebook multiple interrelated-tales-in-one approach, especially with the little references to the other Cthulhu stories. Having been a huge fan of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes since I was a child, whilst I still love them, I do find some of the attitudes and words of the time quite jarring to read. So personally I really appreciate the way that Lovegrove steps away from that, modernising without losing the essence of the originals (what other reviews might call “woke nonsense”).

Having listened to all of the SH books by this author on audible, Kleinman is now the narrator in my head for Holmes and I think he has consistently done an excellent job.

A Brilliant Conclusion

Messrs Lovegrove and Kleinman have provided, through their joint endeavours, a brilliant addition to the Sherlockian corpus. Thank you, gentlemen!
