About this listen
From the acclaimed author of Sherlock Holmes and The Christmas Demon comes another beautifully presented seasonal mystery.
The year 1889. The First Terror.
At a boys’ prep school in the Kent marshes, a pupil is found drowned in a pond. Could this be the fulfilment of a witch’s curse from 400 years earlier?
The year 1890. The Second Terror.
A wealthy man dies of a heart attack at his London townhouse. Was he really frightened to death by ghosts?
The year 1894. The Third Terror.
A body is discovered at a Surrey country manor, hideously ravaged. Is the culprit a cannibal, as the evidence suggests?
These three linked crimes test Sherlock Holmes’ deductive powers, and his skepticism about the supernatural, to the limit.

Captures the original feel but a different genre
This is the third of James Lovegrove’s work I’ve listened to. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each one. He does a really good job of capturing the feel of Sherlock Holmes but pivoting it in the ghost/horror genre although still with lots of detecting. They also involve really compelling plots and cases as well, in their own right.

Fun new Sherlock Holmes story
I enjoyed the story and the writing style. I have listened to a few by this author and he gets the right feel to the story.
The narration was okay but some strange pronunciations really started to grate after a while. How can someone mispronounce sooty? It was more annoying that I was familiar with the location of the third part of the story which meant that the butchering of the place names really got extremely tedious. I did manage to finish this one despite the narration. I have had to give up on one of the others narrated by this narrator previously.

Gets better as it goes on
An enjoyable connected collection of tales , some cringy moments ( no ship Sherlock) but worth sticking with. The narrator grows on you despite a few stumbles will listen to more, can’t complain really as it is included.

Absolutely brilliant
A fantastic tale spread over three distinct but interlinked tomes, kept me utterly gripped and unsuspecting until the end! Absolutely loved it.
