About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
A family returns to their hometown - and to the dark past that haunts them still - in this masterpiece of literary horror by the New York Times best-selling author of Wanderers.
When Nate's father dies, he leaves behind a final gift for his son: his childhood home. Married now, Nate decides to move in with his wife, Maddie, and their son, Oliver, seeking peace from the chaos of the city.
But it doesn't take long before things get strange in the night and even stranger by day.
Because Nate was a child being abused by his father and has never told his family. Because Maddie was a little girl who saw something she shouldn't have. Because something sinister, something hungry, walks in the tunnels and the mountains and the coal mines of this town in rural Pennsylvania....
And now, what happened all those years ago is happening again, and this time, it is happening to Oliver. When he meets a strange boy with secrets of his own and a taste for dark magic, he has no idea that what comes next will put his family at the heart of a battle of good versus evil.

99 reasons to enjoy
Great story performed very well. the characters felt well formed and the performance gave them each real individual a real form. First book I've read by Chuck but certainly won't be the last.

Great story, although issues with narration
The story itself is great; compelling narrative, well developed characters. The issue is in the reading of the story itself. There are two narrators — one male, one female, who lead the story from two different characters. The male voice is excellent, clear and easy to understand, and cuts through any external noise whilst listening. The female voice is much harder to follow, softer, and unless you're listening in a silent room is difficult to understand. I found myself skipping backward constantly to relisten to her parts. I'm sure she's a good vocid actor, but in this story her voice is very flat, monosyllabic and has no power to it.

A very good horror
The two narrators worked really well together, and the beginning of the story just sucked me in. It dragged out a little in the last part, could possibly have ended sooner for my taste. But overall a good book!

A Good Listen Overall
The narrators ...the female voice was not good at all, mumbled and not realistic, poor choice, and I will not choose a book if she is involved again . Male voice fine.
The story was okay, started very well, lost its way and was overly long in places, but all in all a good listen.
I did think a lot of the story was very similar to other books I have read over the years, a bit from here, a bit from there, but I guess that happens.

Starts well but the seriously loses focus.
This started off really well but then seriously lost focus and ended up all over the place. Ideas pop up then wander off, the theme is laboured and repeated in case you didn't get it. Very disappointed.
