Summary

You can't see them. But they can see you.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time. Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the watchers and why are these creatures keeping them imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

Good little story

It’s not my book of the year or anything but it was a good story with a decent narrator. I come across a lot of rubbish lately with audio books so it was nice to come across this one! Defo worth a listen.

the idea of the story is fascinating and engaging but some of the descriptive work is lacking never really placing you in the story, but it's a good read and I liked the characters within it

Great Little Gothic Horror

1st off, good narration. Not much variation between characters, but excellent clear reading without any overacting.

As to the story itself, I genuinely couldn't put it down--"The Watchers" reads a lot like a James Herbert novel, if Herbert were a) still alive and b) rather scarier. The book isn't terrifying and it avoids any gore or shock-value descriptions (as in the tradition of gothic horror) but the atmosphere is genuinely creepy and I found all the characters both likable and realistic.

I recently gave up on a Dean Koontz series for being unimaginably insipid, with nauseatingly self-satisfied characters and a tissue-paper plot, and this was essentially the polar opposite: characters who have all the doubts and fears actual humans do, a modern and inventive take on old legends, and a style of elegant, well-crafted prose typically seen in classic literature. In fact, I reckon this is a lovely little treat to listen to, for anyone who likes both horror novels and what's often referred to as "literature" because it combines those 2 things beautifully.

I'd say I'm looking forward to the next book by this author; but as his 2nd book was the free listen that brought me to this, his debut novel, I think I'm out of luck. Believe you me, if he's got a novella or a short story collection somewhere, that's my next stop! Delightful reading for Halloween (aka the month formerly known as October) and I intend to indulge.

Good if you like: James Herbert, H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley

Not like: Aron Beauregard, Richard Laymon

Gave Up

Purchased on the back of all the great reviews but unfortunately, I cannot agree with them. Two hours in and finding the story very slow and tedious and the characters one-dimensional, the book may well improve significantly as it continues but I have lost any interest in finding out. on the plus side I can't fault the narrator for me she was the only positive about this story.

Fancied something different - it delivered

Didn't think it would be my cup of tea but I was so intrigued by it I downloaded anyway. Very pleased I did. It takes a bit of get into but definitely worth the initial effort

Well at least I finished

The book had potential but I got the feeling the writer wished she'd never started it so much more detail was needed to make the story really engaging I could have enjoyed it but didn't
