About this listen

It's the year 2277. For 50 years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, allowing humans to achieve faster-than-light travel virtually overnight. As we prepare to take our first tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained.

While completing their shakedown cruise, Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of the first Terran Fleet Command starship, TFS Ingenuity, stumble into a first contact situation. They learn that Earth is not the first civilization granted access to the stars before their time - and how this Faustian gift has inevitably led to centuries of interstellar war. Humanity's existence hangs in the balance as a powerful alliance assembles a preemptive military strike, believing it to be their only option to protect themselves...from us. Prescott and his small, initially unarmed starship must serve as our only line of defense. Ingenuity is our only hope.

Too short

Enjoyable listen but it way too short for a credit. Need an omnibus edition with the next book.

Great potential

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series. I have a feeling that given that this WAS book one, it's a great foundation what ever is to COME.

A quick Start to what may be an rock story

Ab enjoyable quick beginning to what may end up being a large space opera The story starts with humanity already developing space ships based on information being provided by an alien culture but are they friendly. Although the books are short I'll will be reading the next book in the series to see how well it develops

engaging and absorping

an engaging entry to what is hopefully another splendid series.

articulate and pacey. Jeffrey's narration gives the story pace and gets the heartbeat going.

Interesting ideas in this military/first contact sci fi novel

This is really a first episode rather than a stand-up alone novel. Lots of good ideas. Lots of technical description in the first half or more which will not suit many readers methinks. Interesting but not compelling. Last third of the book was much more action packed and was worth the wait - I will be compelled to read/ listen to the second instalment. In summary this isn't really a stand-alone work so don't bother unless you are prepared to read/ listen to the next one. I feel that the narrator's voice is rather monotone and lacking emotion and although I have heard much worse, I may well read more than listen to episode 2.

slow start

It was a slow start and one section is overly drawn out but after an hour it picked up but then towards the end I felt t was getting a bit far stretched

enjoyable first instalment

Good story and some good exposition to set up what is coming in next book.
Downside is narration is very mechanical at times. it's a distraction from a good story

excellent story of first contact

firslty I'm glad this is included in my audible membership.
secondly, I really like this short story of how humans were " cultivated" in to being a space faring species by other more superior aliens.

in book 2, which was also included in my membership for free, this story arc is elaborated.

I did not purchase book 3, although sci fi and first contact are my favourite topics in listening books, I could not wrap my head around why book one and two were not one book ( single book) . the author spends too much time explaining to the listener how the ship works etc. there wasn't enough story in it for me to be engaged.

A new saga for me, enjoyed immensely!

looking forward to the continuing series, for a new author for me and a new narrator, I enjoyed both from the first chapter!! Please keep them coming!! think there could be a lot of story to get from this particular subject!! the science part is just right, not too much and adds to the story rather than make it too heavy,!! Thank. you to Mr Tori and excellent pace for the narrative from Mr Jeffery!!
