About this listen
The second audiobook in the rich, compelling and laugh-out-loud Spellslinger series.
A Shadowblack plague is taking hold....
It's a few months since Kellen left his people behind. Now 16, Kellen and Reichis have developed something of a reputation for being able to kill unruly mages. So it's no surprise when a wealthy but desperate father asks for their help in hunting down the men who've blackmailed him by putting a deadly curse on his only daughter.
But when Kellen realises the girl is showing all the symptoms of the Shadowblack, he starts to wonder if those same mages might be able to cure his own disease for the right price.

An excellent sequel to the original story!
Can't wait to continue with this series. I do sometimes miss the grit that came with the greatcoats in comparison but this is still an excellent book and series thus far!

Great!
The more I listen to of this series, the more I love it.
I found the first book slightly difficult to distinguish from The Greatcoats as it had the same feel and Narrator, but once into this, all thoughts of the other have disappeared.
Again, a great book and fantastically narrated. I actually think this is the funniest so far and have found myself laughing out loud! Gotta love that Squirrelcat!!

Humorous
Great author, love all his books, the audio version of this is even better than the book, read then listened to them all while cleaning… the hours just pass in pleasure. The reader joe Jameson is also extremely good. His tone, accents etc really draw you in. I would listen to any book her reads. Highly recommend this author and book .. I’m a 54 year old women and do t mind this is a young adult book so give it a go, humour, mild romance, fighting, cleverness… the list goes on.

A great fantasy adventure
Despite being book 2 in a series, the story is almost entirely a stand-alone. It continues the tale of the 3 main characters, with only infrequent brief mention of others from the first book. It's open-ended enough to give room for the next story, while giving a satisfying conclusion to this one, and just hinting at the conspiracy that seems likely to be present on the edges of the next few books, before being the subject of the conclusion of the series. There's enough to leave me wanting more, but without being dissatisfied with this book as a story of its own. Interesting characters who can be both likeable and irritating, well-meaning and flawed. Good escapism.

I think this is where I'll stop
So Shadowblack isn't bad by any means, but I'm just out at this point. It mostly comes down to people who recommended this series to me basically lying out of their ass. People said that this would be a fun, laid back adventure story, but it's actually a sad and incredibly whiny one.
The story is still written well and Joe does a good job with his performance, even if I find his southern accept unbearable so I'm not going to rate the book poorly just because people who recommended this were liars.

Problem
My biggest gripe with this book is the character building Through the entire book he comes off as obnoxious and just the person I wouldn't like to meet he seems a bit of a wimp he's not clever and I don't like him in the book
