About this listen

London, 1812. At a fashionable address in leafy Mayfair, a far cry from Detective Stephen Lavender’s usual haunts, a man is found dead in his room. He has been brutally stabbed, but the door is locked from the inside, and the weapon is missing.

The deceased is David MacAdam, an Essex businessman with expensive tastes. As Lavender and Constable Ned Woods travel between London and Chelmsford seeking to understand MacAdam’s final hours and unearth the grisly truth, they uncover a tangled web of deceit behind his stylish facade. The unusual circumstances of MacAdam’s death are nothing compared to the shady nature of his life, and it seems the house on Park Lane is at the heart of a dark conspiracy.

But when a second body turns up, everything they think they’ve learned is thrown into doubt. Can Lavender and Woods find out who’s behind these shocking murders before more lives are ruined?

Another very enjoyable easy listen.

I felt that I was there in Georgian England with Detective Lavendar and Sergeant Woods.

Enjoyable Regency detective story

I've listened to the preceding 4 books in this series and have enjoyed them all. Unlike some series it's not essential to have listened to the earlier novels as the back stories of the characters aren't necessary to follow this book. The characters are well-drawn and the author gets on with telling the story without a lot of peripheral details or psychological interpretation. It's an intriguing story that kept me listening and I look forward to further instalments .

Best one yet

In previous audible books Lavender came across very sleazy and bombastic. Now he is toned down and a far more enjoyable listen.

The story itself, is captivating and provides a fascinating peak into the vagaries of Georgian life. I look forward to following the further adventures of Lavender and Woods as new books come along.

Have now completed the 5 books and thourouly enjoyed them all. The plots the twist and turns in achieving the clues all keep you guessing, also the social story of the Lavander and Wood families is enchanting with it's wonderful banter between the main characters, more please on audible for those of us who need to listen
