About this listen
At the end of his Grand Tour, somewhere between Athens and Constantinople, Christian Selwyn, the young Earl of Hazelmere, vanished—seemingly without trace.
Time passes. In London, his uncle and cousin move into his home, while his unofficial fiancée, Sophia, is left desolate and in limbo.
Finally, his friends–loyal and close as brothers–set out to search in person, determined to find him and bring him home.
Christian’s startling re-appearance at a grand ball hosted by his uncle takes society by storm, fueling endless speculation. Where has he been during these three missing years? What happened to him? And more importantly, how did it happen?
Only one thing is clear. The earl who left England five years ago has returned a changed man. A man with secrets....

Romance and thriller
I tried this on a whim and so glad I did. It's a mixture of a regency romance with detective work thrown in.

Strongly drawn characters
I liked that the good guys were virtuous and the baddy was a villain. Well structured story.

Captivating love and revenge story
A romance, mystery and revenge story masterly written by Stella Riley and exquisitely narrated by Alex Wyndham. After the first few minutes of listening, I was already hooked on the story and found it very difficult to stop listening and go about my work.
Stella Riley’s Georgian era character collection is enriched with two wonderful new characters, Sophia and Kit, who take their deserved place among the other noble characters we met in the Rockliffe and Brandon Brothers series. It is always a pleasure to meet some of the well-known characters of these novels at the balls and assemblies of the London season or even see them involved in action on behalf of Kit.
The book is a balanced blend of emotional depths moments, witty dialogues, funny to hilarious scenes, tender love, mystery and tension. From the very beginning, we know that something terrible happened to Kit. After his return, he suffers because of it, has nightmares, cannot hire a valet and doesn’t want to talk about it. You can’t stop guessing what horrific experiences he suffered during his captivity. The suspense and tension are increasing over the chapters, until we are finally revealed the cause behind Kit’s nightmares.
The revenge in more cunning than bloody, in line with Kit’s character. And what a wonderful gang of friends to support him in implementing his revenge plan.
Alex Wyndham is a master of portraying characters through his voice and makes the narration highly enjoyable.
I warmly recommend the audiobook to fans of historical romance and mysteries. Let yourself transported back into the last third of the 18th century and immerse yourself in the life of Georgian aristocracy with nights at White’s and Sinclair’s, balls and an improvised pleasure garden in Berkeley square.

Marvellous
Stella Riley has done it again. I love all her writing, her heroes and heroines, familiar figures from earlier books who are part of the scene and, of course, her plots. I hope this is the first of a series; we need to know how Daniel, Benedict et all find love - and adventure. Perfect escapism, with Alex Wyndham on top form also. Just lovely.

Another Riley/Wyndham hit!
I really enjoyed this audio - lots of interesting characters and a well-paced plot. Having read the book first, I wondered whether the various voices might pose a problem for audio, but Alex Wyndham has done a great job of making them all distinct. Really hope this is the beginning of a new series, as I would love to know what lies in store for Christian’s friends.

Excellent plot, fast flowing and absorbing. Couldn't stop listening.
A delight to listen to. A wonderful romance full of detailing, entertaining little moments and a thought provoking clever plot. Depth is added with a nefarious villain who you want to throttle. The selfish, narcissistic characters get their comeuppance and good overrides evil. Those unpleasant personalities are penned with needling clarity and even though it is set in a historical era, one can relate to the human condition and laugh out loud when poor behaviour is justly ridiculed. The ending is neatly tied up, leaving the reader happy and with the conviction that those with integrity and goodness find happiness and hope. Those who feed off the good, ultimately wither.

A very good read
I had read the book prior to listening to Alex but repetition is a good thing in this case.
I have to say this story is a slow start but then the story blossoms into a great one and is very enjoyable with new characters and old characters emerging. There is even a mention of my beloved Rockcliffe! Well done Stella Riley for another great read/listen

Loved it
This is the first book I have listened to by Stella Riley but will not be the last. The mixture of her wonderful plot with the narration by Alex Wyndham is superb match.
The complexity of the story together with the devotion of Sophia and Kit's friends helping him through the aftermath of his trauma and betrayal was uplifting, I hope there will be further stories with his friends as the main characters.
