Summary
Sentinel Dawn has returned.
As Sentinel, Elaine has no end of tasks. From a shakedown run to find a fellow Earther, to Iona's new kitsune [Squire] Nina, to a whole new set of skills and abilities from [Loremaster], Elaine is busy. Her name is starting to be known on the world stage, whether she likes it or not.
Through all that, Elaine is informed that the Sixth Legion is going to be deployed to the Han Empire, to put their thumb on the scale in the great civil war, with each of the factions claiming the Mandate of Heaven has fallen on their shoulders. From the thousands of men and women of the Sixth, engaged in deadly battle, to a low-level and vulnerable [Squire], Elaine has to shield and protect her allies and prevent them from coming to harm. As an Immortal, she's not supposed to interfere in mortal affairs. If the deadly Wardens catch wind of her, a swift execution is the best she can hope for.
The bigger question looms, her sacred [Oath] demanding a response—When does she heal her enemies?

brilliant if darker than rest.
Elaine at her best. light fluffy and interesting but second half is a reminder for all she grown and her cheer the world isn't perfect. the tone shift is much darker and sadder and makes things feel all the more real for it. Worth the read or listen.

I have had it with Iona.
From the start when all we had of Iona were her interludes I could not stand her. I wanted to hear more about Elaine's story and her on goings but that was constantly disrupted with an endless tirade of Iona's interludes.
One of the biggest issues I have with Iona is the lack of nuanced development. She is portrayed as fiercely loyal, brave, and physically strong—qualities that are admirable on the surface. However, there's little exploration of her vulnerabilities or any deeper emotional complexity. She seems almost too perfect, lacking the flaws or inner conflicts that would make her relatable or human. As a result, Iona comes across as a one-dimensional character, with her idealized traits making her feel more like a caricature than a real person.
Moreover, since we have met Iona I feel that the way that she quickly integrates into Elaine's life feels rushed and contrived. Their relationship, which should have been a gradual build-up, instead seems to jump straight into lover territory without the necessary development. This rapid bonding feels unnatural and forced,
In conclusion, while Iona is meant to be a strong and supportive character, her execution leaves much to be desired. She is overbearing, underdeveloped, and too idealized, resulting in a character that feels more like a narrative tool than a fully realized person. For a series that excels in world-building and storytelling, Iona is a disappointing weak link that for me massively detracts from the overall experience and it seems to be just getting worse.
The Narration however remain perfect!
