About this listen

A house of haunted history and ill temper. Make yourself at home in this beguiling novel of love, magic, and danger by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever.

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she’ll need to move in, too.

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

Critic reviews

“A trio of narrators makes this lighthearted historical fantasy with touches of mystery and romance a delight.… Graham Halstead portrays Merritt, a young writer who is somewhat naïve and endearing. Amanda Leigh Cobb brings in Hulda, an employee from the Boston Institute of Keepers of Enchanted Rooms, who seems to be a stern young woman, at first. Nicholas Boulton presents Silas, an Englishman who transforms into the villain of the story. As the narrators hand off chapters to each other, they keep the story's tone and mood consistent.”AudioFile Magazine

“Filled with delightful period details and artfully shaded characters, this whimsical, thoughtful look at magic and its price is the perfect read for a cold fall night.”Publishers Weekly

“Holmberg…has a deft hand portraying internal emotional responses…Keeper of Enchanted Rooms combines lighthearted entertainment and nail-biting excitement.”Historical Novels Review

cute and cozy

The premise of the story interested me. The story ended up being more cozy than I thought it would be but it was a nice surprise.

Enjoyed this story

Think this was a good listen and enhanced by performances - easy to imagine the various characters, who were well rounded and inhabited an interesting and believable world. Probably a 4.5 if I could have chosen that.

Quirky fun

Not exactly great literature, but there's enough quirkiness, clever invention and well turned phrases to make up for the odd cliché that rears its head. Nice use of different narrators, great storyline (you just have to cope with knowing the very telegraphed ending and suspend this thought so you can fully commit to the journey they all go on together. And it's charming, fast-paced and unusual enough to manage that quite well). Thoroughly enjoyed this romp.

Stick with it!

Was really captivated by the sample the audible provide and loved the start of the book up to the point where the narrator changed to a lady with a really annoying singsong voice. There was then a third narrator, but he was actually really good as was the first.
Quite quickly I started to think that I was going to hate the book but persisted with it and I’m glad that I did because, putting aside the annoying singsong voice, it actually turned into quite a good story.
Another thing that I think was a bit overcooked was the budding relationship between two of the main protagonists. It dragged on a bit and felt that it needed to be more succinct, but it wasn’t terrible to be fair. I guess that was guys aren’t really interested in the colour of another guys eyes or what he is wearing!
I would summarise this as a decent listen and don’t have any regrets about selecting it.

Agood read

Enjoyable storyline but I'd say that the voice of Hulda is a bit grating from both of the voiceover artists. Once you get past that it's a good book.

A magical tale.

The story starts when Merritt Furnsby inherits a supposedly haunted house. He decides to move there and quickly is entrapped by the house that refuses to let him leave. Soon after "Mrs" Larkin appears to help to get things in order.
There are magics in the house and at first it seems to resent the presence of the new owner but things change over time and as the back stories of the house, the owner, the housekeeper and the previous residents are revealed so too are new challenges to be overcome and evil from the past resurfaces to threaten their lives.
I really enjoyed this book. It is engaging, well thought out with more depth than I expected and yet an easy listen with humour and at times poignancy.
