About this listen

November, and evening is closing in as DI Jack Caffery arrives to interview the victim of a stolen car. The man who's stolen the car has also taken an eleven year-old girl.

And she's still missing. Sergeant Flea Marley has heard about the car-jacker. He's done it before, she tells Caffery. Twice. Only previously he's let the girls go.

A day later the car is found. Inside, there's a letter: “It's started”. And Caffery knows that soon the jacker will choose another random car, the only important thing being the girl in the back seat. Caffery's a good and instinctive cop but this time the jacker seems to be ahead of him - every step of the way....

takes a while to get going

I love Mo Hayders writing and the Caffrey stories but this one took a while to get going for me. I found the plot harder to follow as to why antagonist did what they did and the background into his character. I found her previous works way better but I enjoyed the walking man narrative. I can't wait to start the next book. Gone wasn't her best in this series but you have to read it to understand the one previous and one after IMHO The narrator was very good I hope he stays with this series as I am so used to him now. Would still recommend as a great read

Everything I’ve wanted a murder mystery to be

I thoroughly enjoyed this title and am deeply sad that the author didn’t get to write all the books in the series that she had intended. It’s immensely rare to find a thriller where characters are really developed, especially those affected by the crimes themselves. It’s a slow-burn, and well worth it. This one has a great twist that I didn’t see coming, but the book isn’t really about that.

Narrator makes it unbearable

This isn’t a bad yarn; perhaps not as clever as some Mo Hayder books, but decent. Shame that a review told me the answers (I reported it, and it’s gone!) However, had I listened to a sample before purchasing, I wouldn’t have gone ahead. The narrator is AWFUL. Literally the worst I’ve heard. He emphasises the wrong parts of sentences, sounds slimy and demented, and uses a horrific, simpering breathy whine whenever reading a woman’s lines. Don’t get me started on children! I will never buy another book narrated by this man and I’ve learned to always listen to the samples!

Another Great Mo Hayder Thriller

I couldn't wait to listen to this after listening to the previous two books in Mo Hayder's 'Walking Man' series. Once again the book was very well written, with an engaging plot and very likeable characters.

I think I struggled more with the big twist than the rather surreal ending that some reviewers have commented on. I suppose it just took me time to 'process'. Nevertheless, another excellent thriller that I found hard to put down. I just hope that Mo Hayder will bring out another blockbuster in this most excellent series.

Not thrilling as thriller's go!

As said above, not really thrilling although I did want to keep lisening to find out the ending. For me it was too long and predicable. Would I read another of Mo Hayder's books? Yes, I would give the author another chance!

Excellent

I really couldn't put it down. I guess it was Prody but loved the chase

A Well Constructed Plot

This is one of the best detective stories I have read (or heard!). It was well-read and the plot was gripping - couldn't put it down. I have pre-selected two more Mo Hayder books for next month. Admittedly the ending was a little 'Hollywood', but I didn't mind as it was so well constructed and I enjoyed the twists in the plot.

Excellent police procedural

What did you like most about Gone?

Well plotted, not so gory that you think the author is trying too hard.

Any additional comments?

The main police characters , though flawed, are believable. The story line not too sensational as to be unbelievable. A good all-round read.
