About this listen

A beautiful death. A perfect murder. A sexual predator is at large on the streets of Imperial Vienna and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt appeals to his friend, psychoanalyst Dr. Max Liebermann, for assistance. Early signs indicate that the killer is no ordinary 'lust murderer' but an entirely new phenomenon, his particular deviance revealing the darker preoccupations of the age. To understand his behaviour, Liebermann must employ the latest developments in psychoanalysis and make a journey into uncharted regions of the human mind.

Not as good as the earlier Liebemann stories.

What did you like best about Deadly Communion? What did you like least?

I like the psychological theme to the stories and the period details. I found this story rather sensationalist and unpleasant compared with the earlier ones. There was more focus on the murders and solving them than on the life and characters of the detectives. This made the book rather more limited than the earlier stories and consequently less interesting.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The sexual mores of Vienna at the time were interesting historically. But the lack of development of the relationships in the detectives and their friends made this less interesting than the earlier novels.

What does Gordon Griffin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The variety of voices bring the story alive and make it easy to follow.

Was Deadly Communion worth the listening time?

Yes on balance it was worth listening to. But I might not try any more of the Liebemann series.
