Summary

We think of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, but far more seductive is the pairing of Holmes and Professor James Moriarty, 'the Napoleon of crime' - a rivalry unparalleled in the world of crime fiction. Fiercely intelligent and a relentless schemer, Moriarty is the supervillain as megastar.

This wonderfully diverse collection by writers such as Martin Edwards, Jürgen Ehlers, Barbara Nadel, L. C. Tyler, Michael Gregorio, Alison Joseph and Peter Guttridge reveals not just the evil side of Moriarty's personality but his humanity, his motivations and his human failings. Some of the stories are humorous, some scary, but all are hugely entertaining.

Maxim Jakubowski is a London-based novelist and editor. He was born in the UK and educated in France. Following a career in book publishing, he opened the world-famous Murder One bookshop in London in 1988. He compiles two acclaimed annual series for the Mammoth list: Best New Erotica and Best British Crime. He is a winner of the Anthony and the Karel Awards, a frequent TV and radio broadcaster, crime columnist for the Guardian newspaper and literary director of London's Crime Scene Festival.

Book at bedtime at its best

Lots of fab short stories. If you are a fan of Sherlock you will love hearing about his arch nemesis.

A thoroughly refreshing take on Moriarty

I absolutely loved this collection of short stories. Well known characters taken and adapted for new, fantastical adventures. Brilliant. I highly recommend listening to this audiobook.

A very good mix

There were a number of stories that I wished were longer.
Great to listen to other perspectives of Moriarty.

I am a fan of the Napoleon of Crime

Some very clever stories in this collection and only one that i did not enjoy. Chilling perfect murders, interesting puzzles and surprising twists. Great to re imagine this villain and the reading is entertaining and easy to listen to.

surprised

Great stories. Imaginative. Illuminating. The game was, is, and forever will be, afoot. Wonderfully narrated. A hidden gem of a book.

Really well read.

I'm half way through this book of short stories. The initial ones I've listened to are good. The Sci-Fi one jarred and there are other moments when Moriarty admits his genius to himself, whilst coming up with not very invasive or inventive plans, which are outright hummph making. The lesser ones tend to denigrate Holmes which hacks me off, because he was the reason I was here in the first place. I'll keep listening, but only because I'm hoping I'll come to the one that balances both Holmes and Moriarty in an understanding of their relationship that I can believe in. No more Martians please.

Waste of a credit

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There is no quick fix to make this any more than a 1 star and I would have given zero if that were an option.

Has The Mammoth Book of the Adventures of Moriarty put you off other books in this genre?

It has made me cautions. I should have been aware some one would ride the coat tails of the great authors.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Toby Longworth?

Perhaps the irritation of the books content is swaying my opinion but his narration is annoying.

What character would you cut from The Mammoth Book of the Adventures of Moriarty?

All.

Any additional comments?

What a huge disappointment. A mish-mash of borrowed ideas and weak plots, strung together and relying on association with Sir ACD's wonderful tales. This will be the only book I will have deleted from my library. Maxim Jakubowski should be ashamed.
