About this listen

No war can be fought with clean hands. Not even the ones waged for the right reasons. Not even the ones you win.

Tisaanah bargained away her own freedom to save those she left behind in slavery. Now, bound by her blood pact, she must fight the Orders' war—and Max is determined to protect her at all costs.

But when a betrayal tears apart Ara, Max and Tisaanah are pushed into an even bloodier conflict. Tisaanah must gamble with Reshaye's power to claim an impossible victory. And Max, forced into leadership, must confront everything he hoped to forget: his past, and his own mysterious magic.

All the while, darker forces loom—far darker, even, than the Orders' secrets.

As Tisaanah and Max are ensnared in a web of ancient magic and twisted secrets, one question remains: what are they willing to sacrifice for victory? For power? For love?

Contains mature themes.

Second great book in the series

Excellent continuation of the series. The audio was also so much better than the first book. Looking forward to the next book now.

Great

This entry was seriously good. While the beginning felt slow and took time to establish its footing, the payoff in the latter half was absolutely worth it. I couldn't even guess where the story was going, and I love when novels expand within their own world as the story progresses and it's not just all thrown to us from the start. The author’s exploration of grief and loss towards the end was nothing short of phenomenal, I couldn't move on with the story after those chapters. And the end???? I'm gutted, can't wait to read the next book in the series.

The story was slow but worht it

First half of the story felt so slow, almost DNF’ed it. But keep listening. Everything will become super important later. Also! Male narrator, one again, awfull. These breaths in between every sencence… į felt like Į have been listening to the phonecalls of a maniac lol

DEAR LORD!! the audiobook almost made me quit.

4.5!!! Chef Kiss!!
“Men want power because it makes them feel good. Women want power because it lets us do things.
What will you do if you have a lot of power (magical or otherwise), what is really “to do good”?
The great writing remains after book 1. We are still following Max and Tisaanah’s journey; learning a bit more about Reshaye, which I must admit I fell for in this book too and that was unexpected.
We are getting more information about the magic system, where it come from and the perils that might come from mistakes and bad decisions making in the past.
You can not avoid being so immerse in the story that you feel you are there, just besides the characters, living in this world. That is how well written this story is.

The narration was poorly POORLY edited. It is even worse than the audible of the first book. One can hear the female narrator breaks and swallows.. the male narrator is either exhausted or frustrated, IT IS AWFUL

But the book itself is great, so it is very sad that many will drop it off due tot he narration.

Even better than the first

This was a great second book and (thus far) doesn’t suffer from the dreaded ‘middle book syndrome’. There is enough action and conclusion to the initial stories whilst opening up an even more epic story yet to come. The voice actors were good (though I found the male narrator’s breaths in both this and the previous book a bit distracting) and production could do with some more co-ordination, as the different voice actors gave different accents to a couple of characters, which was a bit confusing.

Captivating second book of the series

Great book for all who love quality fantasy, with dynamic world-building, unexpected turns and strong characters. As for the audiobook, the male voice is flat and disappointing, the the female part is great though.

The male voice actor makes me mad

For some reason the way the male voice actor does his parts really irk me. Not much of a performance and my brain switches off to what he says. Also not a huge fan of the female voice actor either but it’s slightly better than the male.

Overall the story is good though, which is what matters

Just as good a book 1 with a more expansive world

Loved the expansion of this world and new characters, twists had me guessing, immediately getting book 3.
