About this listen

'
They will forget that we are flesh-and-blood women who have lived, and who now die, at the mercy of those who judge us.'

Discover the dark and gothic historical novel inspired by the true story of Giulia Tofana, the first documented female serial killer in history. Perfect for fans of The Familiars and The Lost Apothecary.
--------------
Murderer or saviour? You decide. . .

Rome, 1656

In the shadowy backstreets of the Eternal City lies an apothecary – a place for women to take their heartbreaks and troubles. Herbs for childbirth. Tarot readings to tell their fortunes. An undetectable poison that can kill in four drops.

Alongside her circle of female poisoners, Giulia Tofana dispenses her deadly potion to free the downtrodden women of the city from their abusive husbands. A path she’s determined to follow after a harrowing childhood in Palermo.

But even in a time of plague, it does not go unnoticed when the men of Rome begin to fall like flies.

With a newly elected Pope hell-bent on ridding the city of heretics and witches, and the Holy Office of the Inquisition on her tail, Giulia is in more danger than ever. . .

How far will she go for the women who need her help?

Exploring the realities of what it is like to be a woman who rebels against society, A Poisoner’s Tale takes the listener on a tense, challenging but spellbinding journey. This is not just a retelling of the legend of Giulia Tofana but an ode to sisterhood and motherhood, to defiance and secret rebellion.

Vivid, exciting, compelling, cannot put it down!

Incredible story from real life medieval Italy, told so vividly you feel you are there. It’s beautifully written and you can relish the vivid descriptions, but it still races along. A page-turner! I can’t recommend highly enough!

The whole audiobook.

This is possibly the best audiobook I've listened to in 20years. A riveting story based on fact and superbly narrated. So sad and thought provoking, this will stay with me for years to come.

Amazing story well written

This is a stunning book. I could feel, touch and taste 15th century Italy. The characters feel so real. Fear and loathing, power play and domination.
There’s very real violence, very realistically portrayed, but it’s never gratuitous.
Hard to put down and always very moving.
Fabulous.

Celebratory & Affirming

Superbly crafted, a tale of exploitation, patriarchy, obsession and revenge. Explores the dark side of Christian patriarchy, the hidden sexual abuse and pedophilia, the cruelty of the inquisition in its treatment of woman. At the same time it celebrates the kindness, strength and loyalty of women, in the face of persecution and death they shine. Loved it.

So many twists and turns

Fascinating. Brilliant characterisation and descriptions of places and events in this retelling of the legend of Guilia Tofana, the C17th Italian poisoner. I was right there amongst the sisterhood as they went about their daily lives: making salves, saving lives, brewing poison to take lives, and wandering the alleyways to deliver their wares, and to remain unseen …

Ver well read

This tragic story about the poisoners in Rome who tried to help women who had been maltreated by their husbands was very moving. However, I found it terribly repetitive. The use of ‘I thought I was going to faint’ was repeated endlessly and should have been edited better.
At the end of the story, I couldn’t help feeling that a lot of the women were going to be punished as their names were all recorded in the ledger. What a terrible mistake.
