Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Essential lessons in hospitality for every business, from the former co-owner of legendary restaurant Eleven Madison Park.
Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room. Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world.
How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation? Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining room—and memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality. Guidara’s team surprised a family who had never seen snow with a magical sledding trip to Central Park after their dinner; they filled a private dining room with sand, complete with mai-tais and beach chairs, to console a couple with a cancelled vacation. And his hospitality extended beyond those dining at the restaurant to his own team, who learned to deliver praise and criticism with intention; why the answer to some of the most pernicious business dilemmas is to give more—not less; and the magic that can happen when a busser starts thinking like an owner.
Today, every business can choose to be a hospitality business—and we can all transform ordinary transactions into extraordinary experiences. Featuring sparkling stories of his journey through restaurants, with the industry’s most famous players like Daniel Boulud and Danny Meyer, Guidara urges us all to find the magic in what we do—for ourselves, the people we work with, and the people we serve.

Genuinely thought provoking
I rarely find books that I read and find myself thinking about over and over. This is definitely one of them. I think it’s a bit much to say that we are now in a hospitality economy, but there are some great takeaways.

The passion for hospitality
I don’t run restaurants but could see a lot of opportunities to take the ethos of unreasonable hospitality into my workplace. I enjoyed the book.

Inspirational with fantastic storytelling!
I was recommended this book by some friends in the coffee industry who made this mandatory reading in their business. The title is inspirational whilst also being grounded in reality and how the ideas in the book can be applied, not just in business, but how it can lead you to be more compassionate to the people around you. Great read, well read by Will.

An unexpected gem
I knew little about the book and the author when I decided to pick it up. I had noticed it in a brief scene on the TV show the bear and after reading the blurb decided to pre order.
Wills writing blew me away. What he has crafted is like three books in one; a touching autobiography, a behind the scenes look at the creation of one of the best restaurants in the world and a treatise on how to lead an organisation. All delivered through a voice as rich as warm butter.
One of the best books I’ve experienced

Best book I’ve read this year
I loved EMP before I read this book and now it’s clear to me why. The world would be a better place if more people had an outlook like Will. Thank you for bringing us such a warm and feel good book
