Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

An unmissable thriller from the number one bestselling author.

Who do you trust when everyone's guilty?

Marky Bishop is dying. That's why they've given him a compassionate early release, only where can a career criminal like him go to spend his final months?

From the outside, Glenfarach looks like a quaint, sleepy, snow-dusted village, nestled deep in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, but things aren't what they seem. The place is thick with security cameras, and there's a strict nine o'clock curfew, because Glenfarach is the last safe haven for people who've served their sentences but can't be safely released into the general population.

For Detective Constable Edward Reekie, this was supposed to be a simple delivery job—drive his new boss up to HMP Grampian and collect Marky Bishop, take him to Glenfarach, then head back home again. Nothing dangerous or complicated.

So how could it all go so horribly wrong?

The weather's closing in, tensions are mounting, and time's running out—something nasty has come to Glenfarach, and Edward is standing right in its way....

Brilliant

Intriguing and captivating, I was engrossed from chapter one. The plot twists kept me guessing and the characters were multi dimensional. Humorous and shocking in equal measure, I loved it.

Brilliant

Really enjoy the humour that’s so delightful in often dark crimes from Stuart Macbride. Loved the dedication in last book to Victoria Wood. The same laughable conversations between characters who often are on totally different topics are wonderfully created between the likeable characters in Macbride’s books.

Great story, excellent performance

I laughed my way through this fantastic performance, especially by McHugh. Dark humour a plenty, brilliant characters, all typical of Macbride's style. Some nice plot twists which I won't spoil.

MacBride at his best. Get it in your library.

A classic MacBride story, and what an intro to it! Initially you think it will spoil the rest of the story, but no way. It's so entertaining, keeping you hooked with the utterly unexpected plot filled with brilliant characters, at times making you laugh, then on the edge of your seat. As always it's exceptionally well read by Greg McHugh who is a master at making the brilliantly crafted characters come alive, this time with the addition of Cathleen McCarron voicing the story from Bigtoria's perspective.

I was so disappointed with the previous Stuart MacBride book that I'd listened to, In a Place of Darkness, that I was tempted not to bother, but I'm so glad I did. Absolutely brilliant. Yes, ok, there were a few sections where the number of similies and descriptive text could have been halved with no detriment to the storytelling, but the story was blooming great, with utterly unexpected twists, and it was just the right length, unlike Darkness.
I thoroughly recommend The Dead of Winter.
I've just checked on the dates of publication and found that Darkness was written AFTER The Dead of Winter. I do so hope that he returns to his classic, trademark style of writing and we don't get another turgid tome like Darkness.

Loved this book!

I was a bit apprehensive in buying this book due to the negative reviews but I needn’t have worried. Excellently written as always with laugh out loud moments. I loved Edward’s character- the perfect foil for Victoria his grumpy superior. Hopefully many more books to come featuring this duo.

Excellent!

I love Stuart McBride and this book didn't disappoint. It's dark humour made me laugh out loud on the bus. The characters echoed his earlier books and were a return to the first books I read that hooked me. No character duo will ever live up to McCrae and Steele but I did warm to Edward and loved his personality. I almost felt like I knew him which is a testament to the brilliant writing of the Author. The action was skillfully written and kept me listening to "just one more chapter" I highly recommend this book.

Didn’t enjoy the last book… really liked this one.

Worked out what the possible twist might be and sure enough it happened, except 10 minutes later the twist untwisted and then there were another 2 or 3 twist I had t seen coming. Really enjoyed it. Recommend.
