Summary

Inspired by the real-life memoirs of Edinburgh's first detective, James McLevy, here are more fantastic fictional adventures featuring the tenacious Victorian crime-solver. Once again, McLevy and his faithful sidekick Constable Mulholland patrol the dark wynds and back alleys of 1840s Leith tracking down evildoers - aided by a surprising ally: the beautiful and resourceful brothel-keeper Jean Brash.
In these collected episodes, McLevy investigates the kidnap of a women's rights campaigner, sets out to prove that a celebrated stage magician is a jewel thief; probes a series of street attacks on clients of The Just Land; and is kidnapped by a grieving father seeking vengeance for the death of his son. Plus, Jean's life hangs in the balance when she is poisoned by a mystery assailant; Mulholland is challenged to a duel; and the new docks in Leith threaten to change McLevy's life forever...
Also included is Meet James McLevy, a 2016 remake of the original pilot episode, in which the idiosyncratic detective investigates the demise of a bank manager found dead and naked by the Water of Leith.
Brian Cox stars as McLevy, with Siobhan Redmond as Jean Brash, Michael Perceval-Maxwell as Mulholland, David Ashton as Roach and Colette O'Neill as Hannah.

absolutely LOVE this series
I listen to it again and again and enjoy it each time. the humour, and plots go hand in hand perfectly, but I feel the actors take it to a whole new level! I couldn't pick better actors to play these roles only wish they would take it to the TV with the same actors. just brilliant in every way

An utter delight
So coming to the end of almost 40 hours of the wonderful Mclevy is a sadness. I caught some episodes on R4 and it's been a delight to binge the series. All that's left is the four episodes set in The New World currently available on iPlayer which I'm about to listen to.
Also, for those who love McLevy, give the excellent Frey & McGray series a try.

EXCELLENT
I can only echo what others have said. I listen to it over and over again, the plots never tire and the acting is superb.
Could this transfer to TV? I wonder. Although, in all likelihood the cast would have to change and that would not work.

Charlie is Jean Brash's darlin'!
It's rare when a series finally draws to a close, however satisfactorily, that one feels genuinely sorry but that's the case with the McLevy dramas. This collection as with the first, has been a real pleasure to listen too.
Each episode was mostly self-contained with interesting crimes befitting the setting of Leith & Victorian times. While the entertaining, symbiotic relationship between Inspector James Charles McLevy and bawdy-house madam Jean Brash simmered away, there being so much more than just a love of good coffee between them.
Full credit goes to the actors Brian Cox, Siobhan Redmond & the cast of this fine production.
Unlike the fictional Inspector McLevy, the real life James McLevy, didn't sail away in his prime, but stayed in Edinburgh his entire police career. As one of cities first detectives, he earnt a reputation for almost aways securing a conviction. After thirty years service he retired in 1860, and wrote several books, including Curiosities of Crime in Edinburgh & The Disclosures of a Detective, based on his old cases.

Excellent Stories & Performances
I’d rate this as the best radio drama on the BBC for many years. Engaging characters from the outset, and superb performances throughout.
I’ve read one of the McLevy novels and I’d say they loose something on the page, overshadowed perhaps by the ability of this great cast.
One complaint would be that the introductory episode is placed at the end, a briefly thought I was getting a new instalment that I’d missed.
It would be interesting to see more from these characters… I can’t imagine them having hum drum jobs & living the quiet life somehow.

Easy listening with some humour and well performed. but very confusing when you seem to reach the end of the story and then the story continues! Looking at the chapter names, the intro has been put after the full series finale?
