About this listen

Penguin presents the new unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Dead Men's Bones, the new gripping thriller from James Oswald.

Morag Weatherly and her two young daughters have been shot by husband Andrew, an influential politician, before he turned the gun on himself. But what would cause a rich, successful man to snap so suddenly?

For Inspector Tony McLean, this apparently simple but high-profile case leads him into a world of power and privilege. And the deeper he digs, the more he realises he's being manipulated by shadowy factions.

Under pressure to wrap up the case, McLean instead seeks to uncover layers of truth - putting the lives of everyone he cares about at risk . . .

Brilliant

Another great detective story. I can highly recommend reading this. I would advise reading the series in order though.

Another twisting tale!

If you could sum up Dead Men's Bones in three words, what would they be?

Convoluted, engaging, unexpected.

What other book might you compare Dead Men's Bones to, and why?

This series might be compared to Peter James' detective who works in Bristol. DI Roy Grace also has had a woman disappear - though she left of her own accord, not killed by a serial killer. He also has issues with a nasty boss but Pugh doesn't hold a candle to Dagwood!!!

Have you listened to any of Ian Hanmore’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to other performances by Ian Hanmore but look forward to doing so - he is excellent with his individual characterisations.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

McLean's late night visit to his burnt out flat was very moving - the author gave such a good description of his desolation and the narrator didn't give in to the temptation to make it mawkish, which made the impact greater.

Any additional comments?

This is a book from a series that gives you everything you need - cracking, fast-paced thriller with personal perspectives of the protagonists. The narrator never loses touch with his characters and makes sure some of the thicker accents are clear for non Scottish listeners without patronising. An excellent read and have already got another one!

Another goodun!

Loving this series so much.
Don’t want to say too much in case it spoils it, but I really like the hint of genre clashing here. Beautiful!

I love these books

I have listened to all of James Oswald's books in order and they are just brilliant.

Ian Hanmore is a superb narrator, although some of his female voices are quite comical but it's not intentional and doesn't really detract.

The story whips along like the proper page turner you expect from Oswald, I often have to make myself get out of the car and stop listening.

Poor old Tony seems to have far more than his fair share of spooky happenings but if you are happy to suspend disbelief you will be well rewarded.

Just listening to the last one now, can't wait for the next one!!

Another good one

I thoroughly enjoy reading/listening to the Inspector McClean series.

I did feel that this book was a little less gripping as his previous ones, but a great book nonetheless.

McLean

A man is found shot dead. He is thought to have died by his own hand after killing his wife and their two young daughters. The man was an influential politician & Inspector Tony McLean is set on a path that will wind & turn, before he finds his killers.

How is this family linked to the death of a tattooed man found in the river?

Great story poor ending

I was really hooked by this story, and found it difficult to put down, but the ending - lots of ends left untied, and a 'sort of' conclusion - left me feeling a bit frustrated. Maybe I'll listen again and see if I missed something along the way.

Nice narration

Love the accents and familiarity of home

Longer than I expected and not a normal murder mystery but enjoyable still despite the unusual elements in the story.
