About this listen

Only his memories can save her…

A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Iliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come.

But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cas faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cas is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her.

And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout revisits Poppy and Casteel’s epic love story in the next installment of the Blood and Ash series. But this time, Hawke gets to tell the tale.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Tim Campbell returns to the role of Casteel Da'Neer in the fifth book in the Blood and Ash series.… Tim Campbell captures the sarcastic and flirtatious sides of the prince. Campbell's sonorous voice is as easy to fall in love with as the character of Casteel, making Campbell the perfect casting choice.”AudioFile Magazine

“Expertly and vividly performed with the impressive narrative vocal styles of Tim Campbell, this…will have a very special attraction to fans of vampire romance fantasy fiction. Original, self-contained, and a must for the growing legions of Jennifer L. Armentrout fans.”Midwest Book Review

I loved this so much

The From Blood and Ash series is one that you can dive headfirst into.
This book has turned me into Poppy with the number of questions I feel like I want to ask.

It was so nice to see things from Cas’s POV. It builds a better understanding of the relationship between both him and Poppy and the relationships that other non central characters.

I just wish that the next part of this series would be released sooner.

This part of the series has perfectly filled in the gaps but also set up so many potential events for future FBAA and FAF books

An interesting twist

I did enjoy this audiobook. As another reviewer said Tim’s voice is quite a big change after having listened to Stina’s narration of the other books but I did enjoy his take on things and that it does slide in quite well with what Stina had already done (making Cas’ voice more posh with Kieran’s having a slightly more “common” twang). A large portion of the book didn’t seem to be giving us much new, but more the same scenes from a different POV but was still enjoyable. Looking forward to the last book of the series.

I didn’t want this to end

I have enjoyed from blood and ash frim Cas’ POV. It put some things to rest and now I cannot wait for the next book. I love all of the MMCs in JLAs books so far but I think Cas is my favourite. This is an excellent series and has so many parts all coming together nicely now.

The narration gets better

I was a little dubious about them using the same male narrator for Cas, not because of his performance, but because he sounds like a 50 year old man. While it did take me some time, I did eventually get used to it (although I genuinely fell asleep the first 4 times I tried to listen). I like his voice for Keiran, but his voice for Poppy drives me up the wall, so her parts are a terrible listen (Give me Stina).

As for the story, it was good. I wish there was a little more of Cas's POV, like into Spessas End etc, but recognise it would be really long if JLA wrote the whole thing again in this POV!

Overall, a good listen; I do love a male POV, but would still have preferred it to be narrated by Stina.

Good but pointless

I liked the beginning and the end! However the middle was basically just a re tell of previous books but from cass perspective. I did enjoy it but I think it could of been a short story and not a 20h re-telling…

Reverting

Having listened to all the other books in this series, this one will not disappoint. I can't wait for the next episode to this ongoing story and hope we don't have to wait long.

I liked it more than I thought I would but didn’t love it!

Based on the reviews I didn’t think I would like it but it was nice to get cas’s perspective. Agree though that it was a lot of the exact same story re told which would have been nicer if more of the present story was interwoven. I still love all of the characters & the ending was great!

Thoroughly enjoyable

Loved Cas POV and feel like I’ve been waiting for this book for a long time. It did not disappoint.

JLA has a way to rock your world. Specifically through the very distinct voices of her characters. I loved how genuine Casteel appeared in these scenes we know and love. I loved hearing his voice. I really really enjoyed the unseen scenes, those with Kieran were fab too.

I also think Tim Campbell did a fantastic job with this performance. It is not easy to step into the shoes of another narrator so late in the series and to step into Stina’s shoes had to be particularly intimidating. Having said that - great job was done here. I won’t lie saying I don’t miss Stina’s performance, especially of Cas and Kieran, her performance of them was in fact what first hooked me to these books, but I also understand that these series is a 9 book commitment. Over several years. So while I hope we continue seeing Stina back, Tim has done great too and is very welcome to the family.

Now, bring on the next books. Cant wait.

Reliving the same story, but I kind of enjoyed it

It was great to relive the blood and ash story, but I think this book had a good concept and some missed opportunities. Most of it is stuff we already knew with most of it being scenes between Cas and Poppy. I would have liked to hear more of the torment of the pretending later from Cas’ point of view. Also some more of the stuff we did not know already. However, looking forward to the next one.

Loved this POV

It feels a lot like rereading the first book, with some extra bits that will have you kicking your feet.
