About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Erotica, 2014

Romantics everywhere have been enthralled by Emily Bronte's classic novel of the tragic love between beautiful, spirited Catherine Earnshaw and dark, brooding Heathcliff. The restrained desire between these two star-crossed lovers has always smoldered on the page. And now it ignites into an uncontrollable blaze. In Wuthering Nights, writer I.J. Miller reimagines this timeless story to reveal the passion between Catherine and Heathcliff - in all its forbidden glory.

Set against the stark, raw beauty of the English moors, Heathcliff, an abandoned orphan, recognizes his soulmate in wild, impulsive Catherine, the only woman who can tame his self-destructive nature. And Catherine cannot deny the all-consuming desire she feels for him, despite his low birth. Together they engage in a fiery affair - one that will possess them, enslave them, and change their destinies forever...

Certainly fills the gaps!

Would you listen to Wuthering Nights: An Erotic Retelling of Wuthering Heights again? Why?

Most certainly. A confident delivery, appropriately matched to character and regional accent works beautifully, even if Heathcliff sometimes seems a little comedy Yorkshire. The story follows accurately that of the original accurately, and has some really nice touches bringing in words, phrases and speeches I remember well.

The erotic aspects are well written, most certainly explicit and, one must say, thoroughly enjoyable. They fit with the characters and situations perfectly, and you can imagine perfectly that these are the missing elements from Bronte's original - if only the Victorian publishers had been a little more open minded I like to think this is exactly what she had in mind!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tricky. Nellie is considerably less annoying than in the original, and Catherine is perhaps more self-indulgent... Isabella becomes a more rounded character, and you do feel for both her temptation and predicament as we proceed. Hindley is as obnoxious as ever... On balance I think probably Heathcliff, brutal as he is in his frustration and anger, but it's a close run thing between him, Catherine and Nellie,

What does Joy Pratt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She delivers the story well, with a tone that is engaging. At no point does she try and overplay the erotic aspects with faux sensuality, which frequently destroys the erotic element of audiobooks. She reads the whole as a proper story superbly, with excellent pace, intonation and characterisation; if there's one thing she brings that I couldn't have gained from a reading, it's the feminine voice, which adds immensely to the story.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Ha! Not laugh or cry, but it did elicit a reaction.

Any additional comments?

One of the best erotic books I've read or listened to, with excellent narration.

Porn by another name.....

Reading the reviews you might be forgiven for thinking this work provides additional insight into the novel. That was my mistake. It is really graphic pornography piggy backing on Wuthering Heights. If porn is your thing then you'll enjoy this audiobook.

Waste of time

Absolute rubbish. Not even close to the original. An insult to an excellent original novel. About as erotic as a wet fish.

Couldn't stand the reader.

The reader made this retelling very hard to endure without laughter. She puts on a strange voice to try and sound sexy, but all those attempts made the entire experience laughable and cheap.
The author herself wasn't ready to take on this challenge either; the mixed use of modern and archaic names for the private areas caught me off guard every time, and many erotic passages were unnecessary and frankly excessive. Made my eyes roll.

It took me a long time to finish the book.
