All Americans are familiar with the story of the Pilgrims--persecuted for their religion in the Old World, they crossed the ocean to settle in a wild and dangerous land. But for most of us, the story ends after their brutal first winter at Plymouth, with a supposedly peaceful encounter with the Native Americans and a happy Thanksgiving.

We are admonished not to simply learn to say our prayers, but to pray our prayers. After three years in England, William Landor returns to Boston in 1774, little knowing the events that are about to unfold. The matter-of-fact descriptive title of this interesting little volume on railroading in the pre-Civil War South does not do justice to Alvarez's coverage of the subject. Along with his full account of trains and train accommodations, he manages to encompass a number of social, political, and even ideological subjects.

The stories written in this book are typical of those found throughout history. The explorers of the old world discovered a continent that was new to them, and they jabbed their flag into the ground and claimed that land for their sovereign. There was no regard for the native peoples of that land. At first, welcoming the Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, French, and English onto their shores, the Indians soon discovered that the strangers in their land were not there to live peacefully beside the Indian.
